    Unhappy PSU Blown

    HI Everyone on this scorching day.

    MY mates PC PSU has just blown up

    The psu is made by FSP group and i've just emailed them to see if they still make that particular model, FSP245-60GP.

    Unusually on the back there is a 12V pin to power speakers

    Does anybody know where to get a similar supply with that 12V pin? Any cheap jobby will do as long as it has said pin.

    Or as it looks like only a diode has blown would it be possible to fix it?

    Thanks in advance

    Personally I have never seen a psu with that 12v connector on the back. Is it out of a pre built pc that was bought with speakers/monitor etc?

    It may be possible to repair it, but I wouldn't recommend it, it looks really cheap and the soldering on those smt resistors on the left is awfull! Plus diodes don't just blow m8, something else normally causes them to blow ie when they are in a rectifier stage and the preceding transformers insultaion breaks down..

    Have you tried a google search?

    If you got a normal psu, you could always take 12v from one of the molex connectors and make an adapter. You can buy those connectors from maplins and RS m8...

    Thanks for reply mate.

    Yes it's out of a Packard Bell and the 12month warranty has just expired, perfect

    Yes i think i'll just get a cheapo 300W and take the 12V pin power like you said. The 12V pin has 1 black and 1 yellow wire. i notice the molex has 2 black and i cant remember which of 'em is 12v or 5v. Any idea which to connect.

    Thanks again.

    Both should be connected to the same ground point in the psu so either will do. But personally I would use the one next to the yellow wire simply for looks and political correctness!!

    Good luck!

    On the molex :
    Yellow = +12v
    red = +5v
    2 * blacks = 0V
