    Question New PC £1k-1.2k

    Hey guys

I'm thinking about getting a new desktop because my laptop can't handle the new games anymore. The PC will be used for games mainly but also 3d Max and programming so I would probaly benefit from a quad core CPU.

I think I will overclock the processor but I havn't done anything like that since my Pentium 3. Which CPU, chipset/motherboard and cooler should I go for? I'm thinking about Zalman 9700 but it's huge and heavy and I don't know if that would cause any problems. I think maybe I'll go with Core 2 Q6600 or should I wait for Yorkfield? I don't have a clue on what motherboard/chipset to choose so I would appreciate some help there.

Would DDR2 PC2-6400 be good enough for overclocking? Which brand/model is good? I will need 4gb I think.

For graphics I think Nvidia 8800 GT looks like the best choice. Should I go for 512mb or 1gb? Or a different card?

What monitor? Some of the Samsung ones looks nice but I don't know what the different models looks like irl (picture quality). I will go for 20-22" I think.

Unless someone has a great idea of how I can transport the desktop in a capable tiny case which will fit in a 20kg limit suitcase I'll just go for the Antec p182 for the case I think. I am from Denmark but studying in Aberdeen, so it would be nice to be able to take the PC abroad. But I won't sacrifice very much performance to be able to do that because I will still keep my laptop. I would not need to take a monitor with me. Which PSU should I go for with that case? Is 600 watts enough?

I think I'm quite sorted on mouse (Logitech G5), keyboard (G15), optical drive and hard drive (Some random sata Seagate will do) so I won't need help with that unless someone knows a really good bargain.

Your help would be very much appreciated

I hope I didn't make too many mistakes in my attempt of writing this in english

    Re: New PC £1k-1.2k

That's better English than most of the English speakers could produce, I'd have never known if you hadn't said.

There is is certainly a hell of a lot you can do with that budget.

    First thoughts are,

    Intel Q6600 or Q9450 when it's available in a couple of weeks. £150 - £225
4GB of PC6400 (2x2GB) ~£60 at the moment. PC6400 will be fine for most overclocking unless you are taking it really seriously.
Abit IP-35 Motherboard £70, you can get the pro but I think the standard one is fine.
The 8800GTS is a only a few quid more than the GT and it's a little bit better and comes with a better cooling solution in most cases. (Although gainward GT's doe look very good and 1GB may come in very handy for 3DSMAX but I'm not sure) ~£190
520w Corsair HX would be perfect for all this ~£60
Antec P182 is a fantastic case but I will try and do a SFF suggestion after this ~£80
HSF Thermalright ultima 90 with a quiet fan or the scythe ninja as the Zalman coolers aren't that great.
500GB Western Digital AAKS hard drives are fantastic. ~£65
Samsung DVD writers are also very good. ~£20

That's around £725 for a start leaving a very healthy budget for a monitor.

For a monitor I would go for something from Dell, samsung or LG for quality, all of these manafacturers produce very nice 22" screens.

With the budget you have left you could get a very tasty 24" - 27" screen and that graphics card will still be up to it

    now that SFF

    This has just been released
    HEXUS.net - Headline :: Shuttle launches Intel X38-equipped gaming SFF PC : Page - 1/1

offers most of the flexability for components as the above PC does but it is very compact. I don't know it's weight but I would hope fully loaded it wouldn't tip the scales over 20kg ..unless it's lined with lead lol

If you are interested in building your own SFF I'm sure we can suggest some decent cases and motherboards.

Yeh the system suggested looks pretty good. I would go for a bit more power than 520 just in case its not up to it and the gt or gts would be the best option. For a monitor i Dont know if this is any good for you but this has a great spec.

520w is more than enough if the PSU is good quality.

That system wouldn't use much more than 400 on full load i'd imagine.

Nope.....the 8800GTS 512mb is a superior card.....and at higher resolutions this becomes even more apparent.

    Re: New PC £1k-1.2k

Yeah I concur with what Mike has said with the budget you have you can have pretty much anything

If you want to build your own SFF rather than using a Shuttle then Silverstone do some lovely cases their Sugo series are a real pleasure or the TJ-08 their uATX mini tower.

The Sugo 1 and 2 (SG-01 and SG-02) are both uATX cubes which take full size components. Both look fantastic with the SG-01 having an aluminium front while the SG-02 having a plastic front which still looks top quality.

The Sugo 3 (SG-03) is pretty much as small as you can go but with overclocking being in the works you would have to carefully select the CPU cooler as the isn't a whole lot of room available! If your interested in this case say and I will talk through a few more of its quirks and what I think it needs in the way of cooling to make it work efficiently, mainly a vent at the back top or an extraction fan there to remove hot air.

The TJ-08 is nice to work in bigger than the SG-03 and more conventional in its layout. Airflow is all right but the fans can be a bit loud so I would suggest replacements.

A duel slot graphics card cooler which exhausts out of the case can be a boon in SFF builds as they remove a lot of the heat from the system where other cooling solutions dump that heat into the case, which then needs to be removed this can be harder as airflow on the whole is more restricted.

    Re: New PC £1k-1.2k

    Hehe thanks Mike

That SFF does look really nice but don't I need to worry about that 450 watt PSU in it?

I got confused like "crazy" did about the GTS. I thought it was slower as well. So yeah the GTS would definitely be the better choice.

I think I'll probably wait for the SFF to become available and then hope that Yorkfield is available as well. But then I would need a wireless lan mini-pcie adapter. Where can I get that? (Couldn't find any on scan)

My budget is up to £1.2k but I wouldn't mind paying less if I can get a rig which can satisfy my needs for less though. Eg I wouldn't want to spend £475 on a monitor (£725-£1200 = $475). I would think it's possible to find something in the price range of 200-300 pounds for a monitor like the one "crazyfool" suggested.

Thanks a lot for all the help so far

I havn't looked very much into it but it is my impression that it's next to impossible to find a descent micro-atx motherboard which you will need for those cases? You have my attention though. I'm beginning to like the SFF idea

I'd go with staffsmike suggestion, nicely balanced system. I would also stick with the 24 inch if your budget allows.
Think about using 3DMax the more screen space you have would be a real benefit. There is a significant difference between 24 inch and 22 inch and at the end of the day this is the main component you use for gaming and your design package ie your eyeballs and the monitor.

I think there are probably a few uATX motherboards to consider for the new quads.

    This bloomin expensive one
Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK
but it is feature packed with everything you could need.

Not sure whether this one will work with the new quads, probably will though

again feature packed but both boards are lacking mofset cooling so overclocking may be limited especially with the new quads which run 1333MHz fsb native (q6600 is 1066mhz)

    Last is this one
Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK

It has increased overclocking functions over the gigabyte offerings, a mofset cooler but I havn't seen any reviews for it so couldn't say whether it was good or not.
Best thing being a nvidia chipset will be that it has the ability to run unlinked so overclocking the cpu is not limited by the memory. How affective that is on this board though I do not know.

Also this board is limited by not having dual channel capability with RAM. Reviews have shown it still fairs pretty well but you will be limited to just 4gb of RAM where the others can take 8GB if you ever require it.

They are all compromises but given your budget I would probably take the asus
as it seems like a cracking board.

Case wise I would not go with the silverstone cube cases, as lovely as they are to look the HSF hieght is very restricted, you can fit some low profile zalman and thermaltake coolers but these are not the best for cooling quads (not sure about q9450 temps though)

I feel a bit dirty recommending this as it is again so expensive but if you want a pretty much perfect SFF case then this is it
NZXT Rogue, No psu, 3 x 120mm Fans Included. Micro Atx only- Black/Blue - XCASE No1 For pc computer cases, atx cases & rackmount cases thats ex vat so more like £130

5 120mm fans, aluminium so it's light but not as light as some (9.2kg without anything in), it's got room for everything you can imagine (8800ULTRA's, full height HSF's such as the thermalright ultima 90 and scythe ninja, extended PSU's) even comes with it's own carry case.. It is a bit bigger than some as well but all in all I think its the best comprimise for SFF's.

    Other good cases imo are

Aerocool Cube Case > M40 - No Psu- Coolest Cube Case On The Planet- All Black - XCASE No1 For pc computer cases, atx cases & rackmount cases
Which should house something like a scythe mini ninja.
    Lian-Li V350B Aluminium Mini-Tower - Black
just seems like a very nice case

EDIT: didn't realise how long that was lol

    Re: New PC £1k-1.2k

The Gigabyte board does support the 45nm chips (ie new quads) I should know I have one, the board that is not the quad mores the pity

    Re: New PC £1k-1.2k

    According to Wikipedia:
The currently released Yorkfield XE model QX9650 (45nm with 1333fsb) currently has limited chipset compatibility - with only X38, P35 and some high-performance 975X and P965 motherboards being compatible. BIOS updates are gradually being released to provide support for the new penryn technology.
So I am not sure if those micro atx boards would support Yorkfield/penryn.

So far I still like the Shuttle better than the other SFFs you have mentioned because of chipset, looks and weight. I am a bit concerned about the PSU though but it says on Shuttles official website that it supports quad core and even crossfire graphics. So I guess 450w is enough! Oh yeah and it has guaranteed support for penryn.

I like how the Lian Li case looks like though, but I don't like the idea of fancy windows and blue light as seen in the Rogue case.

I thought about that it's probably a bad idea to overclock when you use a SFF because of heat, added power requirements and most likely louder cooling, but I might be wrong.

    Re: New PC £1k-1.2k

cooling is going to be limited in the shuttle for sure. Other SFF's will be better but they are often a compromise.

The G35 (asus) board certainly supports penryn but I think the shuttle would be the way to go.

450w is enough for a 8800GTS 512mb system but not much more. The most I would try and get away with in terms of xfire would be 2x 3850pro's but that would be really pushing it.

We're yet to see how cool the penryns run but i'm sure that will be the limiting factor in overclocking it, that said 2.66Ghz over 4 core's is going to be everything you need
