CPU temp monitor - PC turning itself off
My PC turns itself off a few times recently.... It did it just now, so I checked the BIOS health status and my CPU was up at 85 degrees - this was after playing a flash game.
I don't do any overclocking and I have a gigabyte GA-P35-S3 motherboard and a E6750, how can I monitor the temp to see if it's an overheating issue? Or what else might have caused it to happen?
Run something like an orthos stress test and download coretemp, google or clunks overclocking guide will get you links for downloading these free.
If it gets up to 60/70 quickly then turn it off! Don't let it get as hot as 85 degrees.
Running stock that chip shouldn't really be getting over 40 degrees under full load and to be honest with a good cooler you could expect somewhere closer to 30 degrees.
What cooler are you using?

I'd take the side off and have a check that the fan is working correctly (although if it stops you normally get a warning from the speaker)
Check that the cooler is mounted correctly and hasn't become dislodged, either shock or a broken clip.
Check air intake grills, filters and fans for correct operation.
Try running the same game with the side off and see what happens.

Here are the results. It's running at a steady 59 degrees; strange!
This is only the 4th time it's turned itself off, but today was the first time it's done it while I was using it! - the other times it's been when I've left it on overnight. I originally thought it might be my PSU and started a thread here http://forums.hexus.net/hexus-hardwa...-voltages.html
The fan and heatsink are only lightly dusty and the fan looks like it's working properly.
What else could cause the PC to just shut off? - when it happened today, I first thought it was the monitor, then realised it was the PC shut off.
I can't make it turn off on demand! hate it when you can't replicate a fault to try and diagnose it!
Does it only happen when gaming? Could the graphics card be getting too hot or anything else?
The other times it's happened is when I've left my PC on overnight downloading. I was only playing a flash game (a fairly heavy one), and it's not the graphics card cause I checked that temp too and it was within it's standard 50-65 degrees (I have a passive cooler on a 1950Pro). + It's never happened when playing a proper game - just today when playing a heavy flash game - probably no relation at all?
And it's not a power surge or dip, because I have another PC plugged in on the same power cord that I have turned on today.
Flash games are all CPU so it's fair enough to assume that it's probably your problem.
I've only had problems like this with an unstable overclock whether it be CPU or RAM.
Might be worth running memtest to see if the RAM is in order. Otherwise maybe it is just prolonged use that is getting the better of the intel cooler..
I've still got the stress test running... still at 59 degrees.... for 90 mins now - I think I'll just forget about this problem until it happens again. - but worries me that it might happen when I'm working on something important... or when I've spent 20+ mins writing a forum post
Could be the PSU, is it fanless? Fan working properly? Sometimes when the PSU gets too hot, the system restarts..

no the PSU isn't fanless, it's a seasonic S12II with a 12cm low RPM fan
Have you checked the motherboard CPU temperature measurment at the time of the shut downs? Normally this is less than your core temp but could potentially be reporting higher if the sensor is playing up. unfortunately if this an intimitant fault then it will be hard to discover the problem.
yeah, a pain in the arse to figure out what it is... the system temp I've never seen higher than 45. I think I'll have to give up on this one until it becomes a more regular problem that I can replicate to test.
have you checked the CPU heat sink/fan is connected correctly to the motherboard
some are a push fit and dont always lock ( to test mine i try and wiggle it )
Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
