    Overclocking and Temperture

I've been trying to overclock my Q6600, I have a Thermalright Ultra 120 eXtreme as my cpu cooler with a 120mm fan. What temperatures are ok for this cpu and what range of temperatures should I get when I overclock to about 3.4 Ghz.

    Thanks

On average I would think you would be looking around low mid 40's Idle and then high 50's under full load. Thats where I like to stick

They can go to 71 degrees under full load but it's ill advised to get up to and over that imo.

I see, well right now my core temps are 38,37,36,36 and its overcloked to 3.4Ghz. I have seen it get as high as 70 before tho under a stress test, I think my cooler must be lose or something for it not to be cooling that well.

    Re: Overclocking and Temperture

Common problem with the thermalright extreme is that the base is concave/convex, anything other than flat.. so it doesn't get full contact with the chip. Might be worth looking into that if it isn't a bit loose.

Well how should I know if its loose? Will it slide a lot when I apply a force on it?
If the base is not flat what should I do?

    Re: Overclocking and Temperture

It will most likely just rock a bit or not sit evenly when your case is upright.

If it isn't flat you should look into "lapping" it, which is essentially getting varying grades of wet and dry and sanding it down until it is flat.

I'm SO glad you said that. I have my S939 4200 at 2.6ghz (about 20 - 25% boost) and that equates to my temps. Though idle I'm in the high 30s.

    Re: Overclocking and Temperture

Each chip is different and certainly there is difference between intel and AMD but those above temps seem reasonable to me espeically if it's stable.

    Re: Overclocking and Temperture

Temps also depend on your room temps, air flow, thermal paste to some extent, intel step down tech on or off, where I live it is fairly hot in the summers, sometimes the room temp is around 34,35 with lots of humidity, imagine what the CPU would be like, so it depends.
