Re: Newish Rig should I overclock?

If you fancy have a mess around then have a go at it, thats the only reason I overclocked mine. It does everything I want it to stock...

If it struggles with anything then sure give it a go. If not, you have good temps, keep it that way

Go for it. It would be criminal not too. Well that's what i would do.But if your happy the way it is performing with good temps then wait until you get bored and have the urge for more speed

Careful with the peak temps if it's a single slot cooler GT.

    Have fun

Definitely watch those 8800GT temps if you're overclocking! They can reach very high temps at stock clocks. You'd be better off overclocking that CPU.

My current CPU was in my system for about 30 seconds before I overclocked. I never even booted into windows at stock clocks, just tried my luck right off the bat. Tinkering is half the fun of getting new parts for me.

Re: Newish Rig should I overclock?

I checked my pre-OC 8800GTS. Due to the fact that there was no fan control (default 60&#37 it was reaching 84 under load. I set up a further OC with Rivaturner but stipulated fan at 70% (still silent) increasing to 100% at 70C. And yet temp never goes over 74. There's a moral there somewhere.

I should point that that it was pre-OC at 575, and now I run it at 625 cooler than it was at stock settings. Really can't see why you shouldn't OC the GFX, and you'll see a bigger effect in games than OC the CPU.

Re: Newish Rig should I overclock?

I wouldn't overclock that 8800GT due to temps (thats why I got one that was already overclocked; I knew it'd be safe), but I'd sure as heck overclock that CPU; I have the same cooler for my C2D E6750 2.66 GHz, which I've overclocked up to 3.41 GHz with idle/general work temps between 19-26c, and peak temps close to 40c. In fact the only reason I didn't overclock further is I never could get it to post at 3.6 GHz, and wasn't brave enough to try for 3.8 GHz...lol

Re: Newish Rig should I overclock?

you have pretty much the same PC as me..
i overclocked my CPU to 3GHz and only noticed an increase of around 3'C from 2.4 to 3GHz
even under load it only went up about 5'C so if you want.. try it, it's always fun.. only thing is, i can't get my PC to POST at 334MHz FSB but i can get it to post at 333MHz, quite strange :S

but yeah, it's good fun and OCing your CPU also OCs your RAM.. so you get faster RAM from it also

Re: Newish Rig should I overclock?

i overclocked to 3.0ghz and its stable so far. I ran orthos for 8 hours on two cores but it took like an hour for me to realize that it doesn't cover the other two cores and to get it started. Which then decided to stop responding so i had to start it again. So its been 8 hours on cores 0 and 1 and 7 hours of interupted stress tests on cores 2 and 3. Should i re run orthos on cores 2 and 3 or is it ok to go back to using my pc like normal?

Also at 3.0ghz my ram clock didnt increase ( im following clunk's guide) is it generally faster or do i need to manually set a new clock speed.

    any help is appreciated

did you run any ram benchmarks? because probably you wont notice the ram speed difference much in real world apps.
