    Re: Going Quad

i got that one...running at 3.6Ghz on air will go even more on water. Even if you dont overclock it, its still a really good buy. As more programs are written to utilise the four cores things can only get better. highly recommended

Consider the OEM one and get urself a better cooler:

Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK

Be aware that it only has a 1 year warranty rather than 3 cos its OEM.

    Re: Going Quad

Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme + scythe s-flex 1600rpm seems to be the best air cooling system.

this is a massive hs and mb/case need 2 accomodate this.

for now q6600 g0 is best quad option for bang for buck but the q9450 out in mid march will supersede this.

    Fab CPU loving mine.

I'm also using the arctic 7 with mine, does the job. According to the Abit tool (I forget the name of it) it idles at around 16.5-17 degrees (at medium fan setting in my antec 900)... I haven't seen it creep above 25 degrees yet.

matlamont, 3.6Ghz? are you using any other pieces of kit to keep the heat down? What is it idling at clocked to that? I haven't even thought about OC'ing mine yet.

    Re: Going Quad

    Add my two penny worth.
An excellent cpu cheap and powerful.
If you intend on overclocking as people have said a third party cooler is needed.
I have just built a system using the Ultima 90 from Thermalright with a Xigmatek 92mm fan.
Temps at stock 2.44 were 28 deg on coretemp, Overclocked it to 3Ghz temps were 34 deg.
Suffice to say my M8 who I built it for was very chuffed indeed.
Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK
    92 MM fan

    Amazingly quiet.

No nothing else just a clean uncluttered Antec p180v2 case with three fans.

Im idling at between 40 - 45 degrees. I think what helps my temps allot is my pc is near the window and because they'r old sash windows it drags the cold air through. i only use this overclock when i need it though, for gaming and stuff although i could leave it overclocked constant no probs.

You will see a dramatic difference if you overclock that chip if you have the right hardware, but of course it aint for everyone and you only need to do it if you need it i suppose.

Nice, I have an Antec 900 air flow is good so it might be worth a go in the future. For the time being it seems to be able to handle anything I throw at it without any trouble. Bioshock in maximum detail 1440x900 for example.

    but yeah, great chip!

Those idle temps are pretty high.
I am running the Q6600 @ 3.4ghz using the Scythe Mine and a little AS5.

    Idle = 29 degrees
    Load = 46 degrees

So do you think the Scythe is a worthy upgrade over the arctic freezer pro?

    Definitely.
There is so much talk about the Ninja its unreal but the Scythe Mine is a magical performer and completely quiet.
For under £25 there isnt a better cooler at that price point.

Quick question for you Blitzen, and something I am curious about in general... Lifespan of an overclocked CPU? If I were to say OC my Q6600 to 3Ghz, aimming for the kinds of temperatures you've posted above, how long should I expect my CPU to last for roughly?

Alot longer than you'll ever own it for!! My Q6600 runs 3.1Ghz at stock volts so I wouldnt expect it to lose any lifespan. Provided you dont put a silly amount of volts through it or run at very high temps i wouldnt even worry about it.

I've got a QX6700 coming tomorrow so Im gonna put that up against my Q6600. I'm hoping the unlocked multi on the QX6700 will help get a nice overclock. Just need to try and not kill a £590 chip

Its not the oveclock that shortens the lifespan......its the voltage increase if you push it right to the limits.

My Q6600 can go to 3.4ghz without any voltage adjustments so, in theory, it shouldn't affect the lifespan of the core.
3.6ghz is possible in some cases without voltage adjustements aswell. (only a lucky few though as most do require a little juice increase)

If you read some other threads about th E8** series CPUs, you will see huge overclocks but the owners are having to stick some stupidly high voltages through them to achieve this.
These are the ones that will destroy their CPUs in a matter of a few months (if they are lucky)
