Scythe announces The Orochi - huge CPU cooler

Scythe announced their CPU cooler: The Orochi. Now since I found that sounding close to Orgy .. I quickly googled it; and Orochi means serpent-like creature in Japanese mythology. Dunno which one I prefer though

The new Scythe Orochi heatsink weighs 1155g (without fan) and features 10 heatpipes. On top of the heatsink is a 140mm fan which has an airflow of 29.39CFM and a noise level of only 10.8dBA.

Expected to become the most expensive Scythe cooler, the Orochi may well deserve the title "overkill" with its 10 massive heatpipes, 1155gm weight and huge dimensions: 120x194x155mm (height). On top of this beast you'll find a 140mm fan spinning at 500 rpm, which may also be mounted vertically. The Scythe Orochi is compatible with all Intel P4 478/775 and AMD Athlon64 754/939/940/AM2/AM2+ Sockets.

Now surely this thing would just rip your motherboard in half when its stood on its side o.O

yeh thats the same thing i was thinking, motherboard would die from that weight. Thats just stupid imo, probably at the price they want its better to get water cooling, atleast your mobo wont break in about a year or less with the strain. They need to remember the motherboard aint made out of titanium or steel etc xD

Woah, it is just massive! are there any weight specs for motherboard safety? Plus what is the point? I think its just a try to get people to go for, the bigger the better, I dont think its going to make a difference as big as its size, its air after all..

My Asus Silent Knight II is just big and heavy enough at 600g. I dont think I would ever want a bigger CPU cooler.

There's no way that thing with a fan mounted would fit in a standard case, well it wouldn't in my Lian Li.

Just looks like a really big andy samurai, surely its only suitable for cases mounted horizontally as it would bend the motherboard if vertically mounted.

I can see a market. Enthusiasts who want to overclock highly with near-silence. Yeah, I guess that's a watercooling market, but WC isn't for everyone.

I guess I'm the sort of guy it's aimed at, but I think I'll stick with the rather more restrained TRU120E and 7v Noctua to be honest. I like mad and zany, but I like the side of my case too.

Don't think the weight will be an issue - you're not going to want to stick that in a car to a lan-party, but sat stationary it'll be fine. It's not that much heavier than one HS/Fs - seem to remember an old Swiftech HS for my AthlonXP couldn't have been much under that.

I would have thought that it would bend the motherboard even if horizontal!
Afterall, they're only held by a few small brackets scattered around.

Also, expect your case to creak as that thing shifts a LOT of air.

Flexing motherboard won't cause problems. It's not going to flex the CPU socket which the critical thing.

Mobos flex a long way before breaking. Anyone fitting one of the original Athlons will testify to that.

Maybe, but the only time that is really used is for testing / reviewing components, and atempting record breaking overclocks.

When testing and reviewing it is probably best to stick to a cooler that everyone would use, for crazy overclocking water clooling is far better.

I dont see the Orochi becoming an everyday household cooler for the self built PC though.
