Please Help - recover a corrupted USB hard drive

    Hello,

I need your help. When I backed up my brothers old computer in order to use his old HDD in a new setup, the USB hard drive I used seemed to get a virus (from his computer). I know this because it tried toload a program everytime it was plugged into a com, puter and AVG showed it as infected with some trojan or other and got rid of it.

Since then the USB hard drive has frozen up everytime it's plugged into a computer. doesn't show in disk management, or my computer, but it does appear in the devices list and the driver is supposedly working. Do you guys have any idea how I could get the data back off it? I've actually disassembled the drive casing at the minute, so I have a 2.5" laptop drive sat on my desk at the moment. Any ideas on how to get stuff off it?

Please help, if there is a solution I'd like to give it a bash tonight!

    Thanks

well.. i've never done anything to do with recovering data, but i know that PC World are experts at recovering data, although they do cost a lot..
    could possibly be worth it.

yeah, i seriously dislike PC World aswell.. possibly the most expensive place on the face of the earth, but.. they are apparently very good at recovering data.

Haha... PC World. I would't trust them with my HDD.

Not sure if it'll work but as a suggestion: you could run a Live Linux OS and see if the hard rive is readable from there.

I'#d agree with that - if there is a virus on the system, booting from a live CD will render it impotent, and should allow you to see the hard drives. You can then copy the data that you need - but be aware that it is possible that a virus may be embedded in the data you are copying, so when you use that data in a windows system, you run a risk of re-activating it. Ypou can run a virus scanner from the live CD, or download a linux compatable scanner (susch as F-Prot and run that agains the data you have copied.

If the virus has corrupted the partition table or master file table, your chances of recovering the data using conventional methods are signicantly reduced, no matter what OS you are using.

Re: Please Help - recover a corrupted USB hard drive

The first thing you need to do, IMO, before you start attaching dodgy drives (whether from virus or anything else) is to backup your existing data (and on a CD/DVD rather than a USB stick).

What OS was your brother using, what are you using, and what make is the USB stick? What was the trojan called (you may be able to find it in the AVG logfile)? What did you do with the old HDD? Can you confirm that other USB sticks work in the same computer?

TBH your problem sounds similar to what would happen if you don't have the correct drivers, or possibly the drivers have become corrupt. You might try reinstalling the latest chipset drivers.

PCWorld are not experts at anything, their tech help people get 2 days "training". If they do data recovery they will send it to real experts and add their margin.
