Fried memory?

i was overclocking my system today when suddenly it all went wrong.

im running a Q6600 GO on a Asus pk5-e mobo with Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-6400C4 800MHz Dual Channel Kit.

The rated voltage of these chips is 2.2. i tried 2.25 (one notch up) then 2.3 (two notches up) i couldnt get the system to boot. now after resetting the CSMOS the system boots to a point where a blue screen comes up then it resets.

Is the memory fried? also, is anyone else running this memory who have had no problems with these voltages? It seems hard to believe that two notches from the rated voltage would fry them, they were very cool to touch also.

Anything above 2.2 can kill this RAM, sometimes it can't even handle 2.2v even though that's what it's rated for. It uses micron D9 chips which are very fragile even though they overclock like mad. I have killed numerous sets using 2.35v.....

Try booting with just one stick, might help you identify if one is damaged. What did you have your vMCH (northbridge voltage) set at?

i left all the voltages bar the memory on auto as they were the last settings i wanted to adjust, i havent tried taking one out yet, will do though.

Did u get any joy returning them for a replacement?

It's pretty dishonest to return them for an RMA when you quite clearly killed them...

yea but they make millions from us so this aint hardly gunna break there bank besides, they may not be dead yet cous it could be a problem with the os or the bios

I asked Corsair to send me a couple of their 4gb sets for free, but they never did. Greedy penny-pinching gits.



Presumably as you're getting a blue-screen the system boots far enough to start loading the OS? If that's the case try giving them a memtest. Though I don't think it'll take any testing to confirm a death.

I work for a company with a 5m pound turnover that distributes products. As such, our margins are between 10% and 50% on most items. Nett profit in a month will be lucky to clear £20,000 because loads of people try it on with returns.

You could try memtest from a self booting disk to make sure its the ram stick/sticks,
I have seen a hard drive be corupted by a bad overclock and froze up even when new ram installed at the same part of the boot it just loaded the desktop and wam froze solid. loooked like a hardware failure but a fresh format and install and it was all back up ok hope your lucky

TBH i aint intrested in what you got to say unless its something thats going to help me. They charge you the earth one minute for ram then all of a sudden its as cheap as chips so i cant see a problem in replacing them if they make a large profit from their products. On another note these chips could be faulty anyway because a few people have said elsewhere that these sticks should take more voltage than what i gave them....

Confirmation from who? Every module's different - just because it worked for Joe in America it doesn't mean it's not going to fry yours.... :\

And to be honest I don't think you're in a position to discuss ethics and deciding what you want to read in your threads. If you did RMA these it wouldn't be bending some rule, it's just plain theft and you covering yourself and refusing to accept the blame that you messed up. It should have nothing to do with profit margins. You'd be a thief.

Buy some new RAM chips and don't set the voltage too high next time! Surefire way to fix your problem unless you've managed to damage your motherboard in the process.

If you're short on funds now, PC5300 RAM is cheap enough and sufficiant for up to 333 FSB.

They will definitely 'take' more voltage than that, but for how long they would last is anyone's guess. From knowledge of Micron D9 failure rates on all modules I think you'd be very lucky to get a kit that could handle it..... the ones that are rated by the manufacturers to run on 2.3/2.4v die with alarming regularity, Team, OCZ, all of them. Who gave you this confirmation? Don't take examples from places like xtremesystem forums as safe 24/7 voltages, the users are almost certainly doing a 'suicide run' where they bump up the voltage to see what maximum RAM overclock they can acheive.

Maybe so but im not here to argue who is or whats not, i just wanna know whats gone wrong. If these modules are so sensitive to voltage change then maybe that should be clearly stated on the rams. Overclocking is the norm nowadays and voltage modding is a part of that.
