Silent Modem.

Hey all,

As title, my modem (Hayes 56k v.92) dosn't seem to make any dialing sounds when it is connecting.
It dials the isp ok & connect's ok, but is completely silent when doing so. Is this normal with newer modems ? & Is it possible to get it to make dialing sounds ?
I've enabled the modem speaker and set the speaker level to highest.
Any suggestions are welcome,

i cant remember exaclty, ive had adsl for longer than i can remember!
first check you havent got a loop cable from your modem line out to soundcard line in conencted, as that usually mutes the internal speaker...
also goto the modem comand string thingy and see if M0 is in there. i think M0 turns it off, M1 is on, and there might be a 2 and 3 for loudness. (i assume you used the options window to change these - the command string will win if the options are set differnt..).
might be wrong, cant remember...
i also have about 5x56kmodems here if you want another one.... or more..

The loop cable from the modem to the soundcard, is that a cable inside the case?
As there are no wires or anything going form the modem to the soundcard at the back of the case.
Also, there dosen't seem to be a modem icon which would have a command string, as such. All there is, are the "Lucent Win modem" icon in the device manager list, and a application running in the background called V.92 Modem On Hold App. Which when clicked brings up a options box for setting some modem settings like, call waiting, caller id, voice call stuff etc.

You can put in dialling strings to turn the volume up as far as I remember it was M3L3 for the highest modem volume.

why would you want to advertise the fact that you are using 56kbps?

When I had dial-up I used to try my hardest to get the modem to shut up when dialing...

I remember when that noise was exciting (back in the old Wireplay days of yore)

Exciting? The only thing about dial-up that excited me was when pictures loaded they were revealed slowly, cm by cm, almost like a striptease!

I need the modem to make dialing sounds when connecting, as it's the only way I can judge the connectivity at that time, as more often than not the first dialing attempt will not establish a coherent enough link to maintain connection for more than a minute. Having the sounds save's alot of time and frustration

lol, 56k is all that is available until adsl is enabled.

Where do you add the command string ? mi Os: XPHome

Do 56k modems have their own speakers ?
