    Which 1TB hard drive?

I want to replace the HDDs in my system with a single 1TB drive. There appear to be a few on the market at the moment with quite a variance in pricing. Hence, can anyone recommend a specific 1TB drive for a highish-end Vista 64 PC? I'm really after performance and not too bothered with noise as I currently have two old Raptors so any new drive is probably going to be somewhat quieter than those!

I will clone my existing system drive onto it.

    I'd buy this
Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK

Seems to be one of the cheapest around and WD are my manafacturer of choice

    Re: Which 1TB hard drive?

Well I've just recieved my 5th Hitachi Ultrastar this morning.

They are the most expensive 1TB drives on scan now, but they are the only ones listed as being compatible with the N5200Pro (although others have used different drives without any problems)

Can't comment on the performance I've not used them as regular drives in a PC. But as they will be in a NAS box I wanted the extra warantee you get and the 24/7 assurance.

    Re: Which 1TB hard drive?

The £133 is the cheapest you are likely to find the WD drive. It's been lowered to that this week I think.

    Re: Which 1TB hard drive?

A lot of these 1TB drives seem to be recommended for NAS type applications (or RAID). Is there one that works well as a system drive for a PC? I guess they all would but the very wide variation in prices seems to suggest that they are not essentially all the same. I've looked at the basic specs for several and an unable to distinguish advantages for the higher priced ones - apart from the Samsung Spinpoint F1 drive that uses three platters as opposed to 4 or 5 for most of the others.

    Re: Which 1TB hard drive?

the wd has a faster seek time then the seagate, the only benefit the seagate has is the 32mb cache, id doubt you would really see tons of improvement, will be even really.

Id say get the WD drive, wd never failed me in 10years+ now, my maxtor one did and some other ones but the wd is still going.

    Re: Which 1TB hard drive?

The fact that they are recommended for Raid or NAS just means they are built like brick ...mess.. houses

They'll all be great in PC's they just might be slightly noiser than standard drives (no idea though)

    Re: Which 1TB hard drive?

I'm a bit unsure about the 1TB Samsung F1's, lots of reports of problems with them. I have a couple and they're great - faster and quieter than any other 1TB drive I've used (most) but I don't feel quite confident enough to commit to buying another twenty or so yet.

How much more performance would you get over 2x 500Gb drives?
