Is it worth it? My Antique PC

As you can see from my sig I have a creaking antique of a PC. I am looking to upgrade it a bit but the budget it tight as we have a little one on the way in April. I don't play the most modern games in fact only:

    ETQW
    WoW
    Medieval Total War 2

It it worth just goign dual core and getting some new RAM or is a more extreme change needed e.g. AM2 etc. My plan at the mo is to get a new GFX card and a 939 x2 and maybe another gb of RAM.
    Specs:

    Q6600 G0, Thermalright Ultra 120, ABIT IP35 PRO, 4GB Corsair DDR2, Trusty old Tagan 480u, BFG 8800 GTS 512, Samsung F1 750 GB.

save your money. if you're desperate to upgrade, spend £30 on doubling your RAM.

the above games should be fine on that system

Re: Is it worth it? My Antique PC

Cheap 1GB of RAM is about £20 for DDR

    £40 for a cheapy 939 X2

£100 for ATi HD3850pro 512mb (can't see any other cards being worth upgrading to)

But if these are the games you are going to continue to play the 6800 is still pretty good imo. I was using a 6600GT to great effect before I got my 8800GTS. Unless it's actually struggling with anything I would probably leave it alone or just get the cheap RAM.

yes, the games you play are going to run fine with your current hardware, a RAM upgrade would be the best for now IMO

Re: Is it worth it? My Antique PC

looks like RAM is the common theme here. I also forgot to mention I have a 22" widescreen monitor which I think was the reason for metioning a new GFX card.

For that matter, if you really want a new GFX card, i think the HD3850 512MB suggested by Mike will do the job.

Re: Is it worth it? My Antique PC

Personally, I'd start from scratch, it's a lot less of a headache than trying to upgrade an old system.

There's quite a few threads around about how to build a sub £300 PC, if you've got a case and PSU already, maybe even £200 will get you going, especially if you reuse the graphics card for the time being.

I would hang on buying the 3850/3870 as reports suggest AMD are set to drop prices on these.

New Graphics Card will give the most improvement. I wouldn't spend any money on the old system on something that can't be ported to an upgrade.

QFT. Another gig of ram will also help. The DFI is a nice board so you should be able to overclock that winchester a bit too. A dual core really won't help in those games.

Why not have a look for some second hand ram and graphics card?

    I'd just upgrade the lot

You can get a mobo, ram and Core 2 duo and graphics card upgrade for under £200.

Re: Is it worth it? My Antique PC

All true, but you won't see a noticeable improvement in WoW unless you upgrade the graphics.

I would also be wary of upgrading the RAM. Firstly DDR isn't used in any new systems so you won't be able to port it. Secondly a lot of NF4 boards had problems with 4 sticks of RAM.
