PSU for my HTPC

I have recently built an HTPC from all my old bits from my big PC upgrade from last year.

I used an old 350W unbranded PSU in the process and while it works fine, it makes a hell of a noise which my wife constantly complains about.

I need to purchase a PSU which is whisper quiet (or totally silent) without spending too much money. Can anyone make any recommendations?

As my PC has got quite old components (Athlon XP 3200) I don't need more than say 400W.

Incidentally I phoned Scan ans asked their recommendation and the first time I called they recommended Corsair and the second time I called they recommended Tagan, adding that their engineers all built HTPC using only Tagan PSU's. This obviously made me more confused hence this post.

the athlon xp3200 (well the one i have skt A) does not use the 4 pin cpu 12 volt line
the mobo will need a more stable +5 volt line when i upgraded i used a Tagan
reviews said it had a stable +5 volts

i also use use corsair and enermax but only on newer pc's with 4 pin +12v cpu input

my HTPC uses a enermax 400 liberty on an old 2.8 P4 ( with a modified 120mm fan)

you may find fan controllers usfull in reducing noise

Very good quality PSU. It's a bit of an over kill but highly efficent so it won't actually use 450w while it's on, just what it needs (or near enough).

380w Seasonic would be my other choice.

I have one on them too i cant hear mine but thats proboley due to 4 removable hd in racks with fans , two internal drives , 2 120mm fans and a cpu fan on a positive note the chipset and the 2400 pro are passive lol

I dont know what its like on a skt a though but still highly recomended (IMO) PSU

Both my machines have 580w Tagan silent PSUs in them, and they're grand. Modular too. Overkill for your use, but you'll be able to get something less beefy.

Scan have agreed to sell me the Tagan 400W one at £43.97. so I think I'll take that one.

I hope it's quiet!!!
