Granted we don't know exactly how much warranty is left, but whats to say there isn't many left - as you have suggested ?

Don't get hung up on the leather case, you can get leather camera bags all over ther place and they're a lot more useful - ex I picked one up in dixons for £15 (yes it is actually leather).
