    Which RAM

I firstly apologise for all the recent queries - I only do a new build every 2-3 years these days so I do ALOT of research

I have decided on, and have now the following bits:

    Intel 8400
    Scythe Mine
    MSI P35 Neo2
    BFG 8800GTS512
    Samsung 400GB T16 Spinpoint
    Pioneer DVDR

    and existing

    Coolermaster Stacker
    Seasonic 500W PSU
    Samsung Spinpoint 200GB
    WD 300GB
    Dell 2405

My final Dilemma is this, I have received with the order some 'Super Talent' Memory 2 x 2GB DDR2 800 5-5-5-15

    I thought I had ordered 2x2Gb Corsair XMS2 5-5-5-18.

I want to overclock this system (albeit reasonably safely) and wonder if I should change this memory for what I initially ordered or return it and order something like this:

OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-8000C5 1000MHz ReaperX HPC Enhanced Bandwidth Edition Dual Channel DDR2 It is unfortunatley from Overclockers but Scan seen to have a very poor selection of ram this speed.

Please let me know what you think.

From what I have read, Super Talent memory overclocks better than corsair's but that was DDR3, im not sure about DDR2.

I'd have thought they both use Micron D9 chips, so it prob makes little difference?

That was a quick change of heart

Anybody have any reason I would need the faster ram? ANd why do Scan not really stock any of it?

No - you don't need the PC8000. If you're keeping your divider at 1:1 then you can reach a 400 MHz fsb with your DDR2 800 stuff. Obviously faster RAM is better, but the difference is apparently fairly marginal. Up to you really. I've got PC8500, and I've got my fsb at 333 MHz, with the divider at 1:1.5, so that my ram is running at 1000 MHz effective.

RAM is mighty cheap these days...

    Re: Which RAM

OK so now the coice is whether to keep this super talent stuff or return it for something like:

    4GB (2x2GB) Corsair DDR2 6400 2x256Mx64 non-ECC 2x240 DIMM unbuffered 5-5-5-18 64bit OS DHX

Sounds like this will be OK. Just reading though...... Is 2x2GB as easy to OC as 2x1GB?

    Re: Which RAM

If you do a new build every 2 or 3 years I would get the Q6600 now and not the 8400.

You will probably start to feel the benefit of the extra cores towards the end of its life and perhaps it will last substatially longer than the E8400 based PC.

With a Q6600 any old PC6400 RAM will probably do as 3.6GHz on the CPU is stock RAM speeds I would personally get something like Geil Black Dragon or Corsair if it's cheap.

    Re: Which RAM

Don't know I'm afraid - never had 2*2GB modules. I'd have thought it'd make little difference...

I know you sometimes have to bump up the MCH voltage a touch if you've got 4 Dimms in, so maybe it'd actually be easier to OC with 2*2GB modules than 4*1GB.

If I was going to buy some RAM these days, it'd probably be Crucial Ballistix. MicroDirect sell it for pretty cheap, and was where I last got some.

    Re: Which RAM

    Sorry didn't read it properly

Oh well, clock the nuts off it i'm sure it will last

2x2GB Shouldn't be any different to 2x1GB really. The RAM itself probably won't clock as well as 1GB modules but i'd imagine the geil black dragon and OCZ platinum kits would get to 900MHz which means 4GHz on your chip.

If you want more then I'd be looking at G-Skill PC8500 kits over at memoryc.com

    Re: Which RAM

This stuff for 2x2 Gb modules? DDR 1066 mhz, and 8 layer PCB. I dont believe any other manufacturer except Geil has 8 layer 1066 Mhz 2x2 Gb chip out, but I cant find the Geil 1066 stuff anywhere.

    4GB G.Skill 1066MHz DDR2 Dual Channel Memory Upgrade Chips 8-layer PCB

Overclocking with 4x1 Gb modules is crap. With one pair installed i can scale up to 1150 Mhz. With both pairs installed I can go up to 950 Mhz and they just dont respond to higher voltages of looser timings.

2x2 Gb is the way to go for 4 Gb.

Lol, I have a tendency for the corsair XMS series, so first i simply went for, GET CORSAIR , then I remembered that I read somewhere that super talent DDR3 ram was better than corsair's dominator DDR3, so I thought it might be worth mentioning rather than pushing you to get Corsair

DDR 800 will let you reach 3.6GHz as Mike says, so unless you want to go further than that, it isn't worth the hassle of changing it really.

    Re: Which RAM

Back from a Barcelona based stag weekend and back on the case of sorting out my memory

Can anyone tell me the difference in these 3, and if it is worth buying the more expensive please:

    4GB (2x2GB) Corsair DDR2 6400 2x256Mx64 non-ECC 2x240 DIMM unbuffered 5-5-5-18 64bit OS DHX

    £67.73

    4GB (2x2GB) Corsair TwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400 (800), 240 Pins, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 5-5-5-18

    £65.38

    4GB (2x2GB) CorsairXMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400 (800MHz), Unbuffered, , DHX Technology 4-4-4-12

    £93.99

As I have said befor - I would like to overclock my 8400 and would prefer to stick with corsair - oh and scan don't sell DDR8000/8500 in 4gb kits

    Re: Which RAM

Ok the are 2 main differences between the 3 types of RAM there.

    1. The first and third are DHX which is corsairs enhanced cooler has fins on the top, the second has normal heatspreaders.

    2. Timings, the first and second run at 5-5-5-18 and the third at 4-4-4-12 if you will notice the difference is debatable and for £30 is probably not worth it.

I would probably go with the DHX over the standard though for £2.50

  16. Received thanks from:
