It was an akasa paxpower 460w so it was a decent psu not top range but decent nonetheless. Overclocked as I have said it consumes a lot of power well in excess of 300w in a decent gaming system so I reckon a high quality psu of at least 500w is needed.

I suppose it depends what graphics card you have but thats a huge overclock.

I agree that it depends on the graphics card - but also how far the system is pushed. CPU-Z screenshots only tells how far the system will boot, but for all we know it may suddenly reboot/BSOD as soon as you run 3DMarks.

Max for these chips without risk of damage is 1.3625V from the spec sheet. People have been experiencing degradation after using greater than 1.4v for a length of time. These chips do not behave in the same way that 65nm do.

ur getting a 4.5ish on a 50-60£'s MB and a E8400 thats insane - nice overclock, whats the best MB for overclocking a Q6600 can you really get 4.4Ghz with watercooling? it...

    Re: Intel E8400 easily hits 4.4GHz @ 1.6v!

i personally think that running a 65nm at 1.6v is insane.. nevermind even booting a 45nm at that voltage!

what's wrong with upping the voltage a little bit and geting 3.6 - 3.8 from the chip?

    absolutely insane!

    Re: Intel E8400 easily hits 4.4GHz @ 1.6v!

That's suicide for 45nm; probably even for 65nm. being a conservative OCer, I wouldn't even go above stock volts on a Wolfie... Just leave the puppy at stock, and hopefully boost her to 3.6 (avg for stock) and pass a powerful cooler on her.

Though a Quad hits the same speeds. Does that explain why i prefer a quad? i think so.

    Re: Intel E8400 easily hits 4.4GHz @ 1.6v!

1.6 is way too high but if hes running that then he probably can afford to lose the chip aswell. Not sure why it needs that much voltage to run that speed.I have an e8400 at 4.4 with 4.24 volts and i have it 8+ hours orthos stable. If he needs 1.6volts then its mostly because hes other voltages are way off.Mostly the cpu and mch references are probably off.I am using the gigabyte ud3p v1.6

    Lol. Lazarus thread indeed

Having been resurrected - does anyone have any stories of 45nm chips dying after you ran them high voltage - or was it all FUD?

    Re: Intel E8400 easily hits 4.4GHz @ 1.6v!

I post in the dinosaur topic...

I while ago when I had my e7500 on order (cheap on ebay ) I read a MASSIVE topic on overclocking Wolfdales. They theorised that Wolfdales suffer some degradation when first over volted and OC'd, and then once they have degraded to a certain level, do not degrade any further.

But the general word was, be careful with your Wolfdales or toast them. Mine's at 3.5ghz at around 1.18volts or so. Plenty fast enough for more or less anything
