Question CPU goin to Defcon 5

    need some help guy's,

my cpu temperature warning has been going off lately

I checked the bios and it the warning temp is set at 66 0c and the shutdwn temp is 70 0c. On average my cpu runs at around 61 0c. Now its a 2400+ Athlon (not overclocked), and my motherboard is a K7 ncr18G.

what sort of temp should i be running? oh yeah and the cpu warning thing has never happened b4. Now ive just installed a 9600xt but i don't think that is causing it, i have also however just put a electric radiator in my room which has increased the room tempature no end lol, could this be affecting it.

ive disabled the cpu temp warning but kept the system shutdown at 70 0c is that wise.

it really scared me the other night when i woke up drunk with this alarm comin from nowhere lol took me ages to work out what it was.

    thanks

you did put thermal paste on cpu before attaching heatsink, yes?
is the heatsink made of copper or alu, how bigs the fan, and would you call it loud?
if its almost 70 then you most likely have no paste there or need new cooler...

Get a new cooler. 70 is way too high...I have my Athlon 2600 at 2.2GHz on stock fan and I haven't seen it surpass 41 degrees and thats with a thermal pad.

Your extra room radiator would've made a big difference.

I once noticed my cpu temp went up by about 10 degrees at some point. I did not use it any more than usual, so i couldn't figure out what was wrong. It always runs on full load and does a fairly decent 51 degrees on stock cooler. I was realy worried. Then i remembered i was vacuuming my room and the hot air from the vacuum cleaner was directed at the side intake fan for a while. I was glad i figured that one out.

Also when i used to overclock my celeron ages ago it worked fine until summer came... At which point it started freezing up because of overheating.
