Re: Gaming pc any improvement needed?

Probably only need an hx520w but it doesn't hurt to have an over specced psu. Whilst a quad core would be nice I would have thought that cpu would be fast enough for now.

Re: Gaming pc any improvement needed?

having a quad core would be very nice.. but not right now, your little e4300 will perform well for now..

that power supply is brilliant btw, spot on voltages, only very slightly out, compared to my last 1 that was .4v under on the +12v :S that was a generic PSU that came with my old case though..

edit: i do find plugging the cables i need into the PSU quite difficult, i'd expect there to be a little slack on it.. but they're VERY tight.. probably a reason for it though.

is yours extremely difficult to add a wire to your PSU?

Re: Gaming pc any improvement needed?

the only things i can see is the cpu.... q6600's are well worth a look.

and maybe another 2gb of ram..... i know xp can only 'see' 3.25gb of it but that extra gb and a bit does help when multitasking and gaming etc.

    Otherwise a very tidy system.

    What Kimi said:
    1. The CPU
    2. Ram

If you arent having any problems at the moment then dont bother.
I'd probably be looking at an E8500.

You won't notice any difference if you upgraded for at least a year.

Re: Gaming pc any improvement needed?

^ I think that's about right. Upgraditis is an expensive disease. Try to upgrade when you need to. I doubt that you'll notice any difference in real world performance between what you have and a Q6600 unless of course you are needing to run four cores due to the applications you use. Benchmark numbers etc are nothing but e-peen, much better to be happy with what you've got and use it than continuing to think about the next best thing to come along. I'd forget about Nehalem too and look to pick up a cheap Q9450 in the autumn or even christmas if you want a quad.

Re: Gaming pc any improvement needed?

I agree. I normally say 18 months, but chances are, it's only the GFX cards (and storage possibly) that needs upgrading that frequently. The rest can probably hold a bit longer though admittedly, system upgraditis tend to bite me at ~18-24months.

Re: Gaming pc any improvement needed?

I'd upgrade the CPU, but do this instead: wait for the Nahalem chips Intel is putting out this fall and get one of those (you'll likely need a new mobo too; you're in the same boat as me - I've got that same mobo). RAM is fairly cheap rightn ow, though, I'd add another two gigsi nthere (even though XP won't see it all, you'll still get the benefit of fual-channel, and you'll also be set for when you go to a 64-bit OS down the road). Thats my two cents.
