So guys, when do you think DDR3 will start to become mainstream/reasonably priced?
I reckon it will be sooner than most people think... 6 months or so it should be reasonably buyable imo (of course not as cheap as DDR2 though)...

well most of the x48 boards will be ddr3, right? That might be the beginning of the transition, I am not saying it will happen overnight, I am saying that more enthusiasts would jump on and it will grow from there
and until Dell get a reasonable price on DDR3 there is not much chance of them using it.
In fact, I can't see what advantage they would get by going DDR3 for the majority of machines which are business based (excluding servers / specialist hardware perhaps)
DDR2 is just sooooooo cheap
Well it was like this when DDR2 first came out for the P4s... it was just as slow as ddr1... its just a matter of time... they won't jump to ddr4 until they have maxed ddr3 speeds/profit![]()
I don't think it's as bad as people think.
If you have a look around you can find some baragins (I got some PC12800 for £120 for 2GB) it will come down slowly for now due to the DDR2 prices being stupidly low and as such DDR3 isn't in that much of a demand, why buy 2GB of PC3-12800 when you can get 8 gig of PC2-6400 for the same money?
I just thought what the hell, tis the geek inside me and it was too good a deal to miss including board and chip but it will be another 9 months or so until it really kicks in and the prices drop so for the moment I am struck with 2GB![]()
From what I`ve read, Nehalem will ONLY be DDR3 (but then we`ve heard that before with X38/48). I think we`re already seeing prices of DDR3 dropping, as such I would agree with SiM & say mainstream by September - But I`m also hearing Nehalem will be more like 2009 (Xeon/server chips late 2008). Things are supposed to be difficult for the memory market, whether this will spur them into reducing prices for DDR3 in the hope that people will migrate from DDR2 or whether they`ll try and milk prices for the latest technology is anyones guess, but I feel the latter is more probable. I expect Intel will try to exert pressure (if Nehalem is DDR3 only) in reducing prices so there is strong takeup of Nehalem - didn`t work with RAMBUS though.
