    Hi all,

This is my first PC self build so I am not sure if all this goes together (or everything required is here) or if I am over/under doing some components. I basically want to put together a system that can handle running Crysis / COD4 / Bioshock to a good quality setings and still achieve reasonable frame

    Case Antec P180
    PSU 550W Corsair VX

Re: My proposed spec - suggestions please

Looks good generally, only a couple of things:

The 8800GTX isnt the best value for money as the lower cards have caught up, a 512mb 8800GTS will give very similar performance for less money (the GTX is still king tho).

Also why get the mini ninja when u have a case that can easily accomodate a bigger heatsink like the regular nina or infinity which will give better performance.

Finally dont bother with the XFI xtreme audio, its not a true XFI chip. Either stick with onboard or get a better card.

Re: My proposed spec - suggestions please

Hey again. I'll give a break down to make it easier to read:

    Intel Q6600
Good choice although if you're not buying right away it's worth looking at the Q9450 that'll be released some time in March. It should run cooler and have a higher maximum overclock.

    Antec P180
Take a look at the newer P182 - it's basically an improved P180.

    550W Corsair VX
Consider spending a little extra on the modular 520W Corsair HX.

    Abit IP-35 Pro

    OCZ ReaperX
The massive heatsinks make them very impractical and PC8000 is a lil overkill. Get a nice set of PC6400 and you'll be set.

    Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB
I can't judge this drive but I can tell you the Western Digital AAKS range is near-as-dammit silent goodness, take a look at the WD5000AAKS.

    BFG GeForce 8800 GTX
I wouldn't be touching a GTX with the 8800GT/S on the scene. The 512MB MSI 8800GTS ShaderOC looks very promising as it has a huge stock overclock.

    Scythe Mini Ninja
Not by any means a bad HSF but the Scythe Mugen and Scythe Ninja will be a good few degrees better.

    Samsung SH-S203P/RSMN
Lightscribe's pants , save a few quid and get the Samsung SH-S203D.

    22" LG L226WTQ
Got one myself and I have to say I loves it. However, it's worth noting that she doesn't have a HDMI port.

    Altec Lansing THX 2.1
Damn good speakers, I was going to get them myself but after a lot of thought I went with a 5.1 system for the same price...

Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi Xtreme 7.1 Audio
Bit of a naff card to be honest. Check the Xtreme Gamer out, it's much better.

    Windows Vista Home Premium 32Bit
Don't waste that 64bit CPU, get 64bit Vista!

    Hope that helps!

I agree with this, the HX520 along with the P182 is a real tidy combination

Hmm i wouldnt say they are that great, got soem for a mate and yes listning to music was great but when your not doing anything there is a low level buzz which would really irritate me. Go with the logitech 5.1 or a lesser 2.1 system.
If audio is of great importance then maybe look into hifi seperates

My 2p worth (similar comments to previous posts):

CPU Intel Quad Q6600 2.40GHz - excellent choice

    Case Antec P180 - Consider P182

PSU 550W Corsair VX - go modular HX520 or HX620

Motherboard Abit IP-35 Pro - excellent board, overkill if you won't be overclocking though

    RAM OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-8000C5 1000MHz - overkill, standard PC6400 will allow you to O/C the Q6600

Soundcard Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi Xtreme 7.1 Audio PCI-E Soundcard OEM - Abit IP35-Pro has onboard HD sound so this may be overkill

OS - Vista Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 32Bit 1Pk OEM (DVD) - consider 64-bit

Definitely consider Vista 64bit! You're putting 4Gb of RAM in the machine, so you be much better off using 64bit.

I agree with the above for the most part but you could go for one of the new Wolfdale CPUs and either save a lot of money or get a lot more power for your money.

Yes, they're not quad core but for gaming that's just not an issue.

thats looks great, only one thing i'd change if it's mainly for gaming. I'd get a dual core E8200 / E8400 something along those lines.

For gaming currently dual core is the way as they are stock at a higher frequency and can overclock higher easier.

give it a year and maybe quad is necessary but not yet.

Lose the 32bit OS for the 64Bit version.

Why spend all that and then take a big step back on the OS.

Thats what is assumed but is incorrect.
I couldnt decide between Wolfdale and Kentsfield either but...........regardless of whether the Wolfdale clocks higher, the Q6600 is a faster solution to everything.

Can you actually back that up (since the Wolfdales aren't actually released yet)? Only I thought that it was generally accepted that quad cores only saw a real performance boost with software specifically written to take advantage of them, which most games aren't anywhere close to yet.

Re: My proposed spec - suggestions please

Fact of the matter is, if you want to overclock the wolfdale quads to their full potential you will need to buy more expensive RAM and possibly more expensive motherboards to get the best from them while the Q6600 with it's lower FSB makes it much easier to overclock on midrange motherboards and RAM.

Difference between the E8400 @ 4.0GHz and Q6600 @ 3.6GHz will be negligable and essentially unoticable.

you seem to be building the mid range special which is a good choice at the moment so personally I would get

Q6600 + scythe ninja (full size not mini as its perfect for the P182) note: ninja might not work with reaper RAM, just get normal size ram
    4GB (2x2GB) PC6400 (corsair, ocz, geil.. it's all good)
Abit IP-35 dark raider or PRO
8800GTS (GTX is getting on a bit, is still more expensive and limited warranty on OEM's, no need for more than that for 22")
Antec P182 (slightly better than P180, just nice revisions)
Corsair 520W HX (modular is much much easier for the P182)
    500GB Western Digital AAKS
    Samsung Optical Drive
    Vista 64bit.

That will give you most of the gaming performance of any PC out there, especially at what is now to be considered a relatively low resolution. Spending anymore would be a waste.

I think you are correct with that..Unless someone comes and corrects you, and me

Good advice again staffsMike (you suggested some good stuff to me last year) unfortunately I can't wait for new release GFX cards as you advised last year as I need to start building now!
