    q6600 heat problem?

    i have p5k pro motherboard
    q6600 G0 @3.2 with ninja scythe

and im having big problems, im using a lot of Vcore to get it to 3204 mhz. in the bios i put 1.4v. This shows in the asus ai utility and cpuz as 1.38 and my temps are too high, up to 73 on load with orthos using speedfan with 15c offset (around 40c idle). im having to set the Vcore so high, as under load it is going down to 1.35 and anything below it blue screens. Ive heard about vdroop but i cant seem to find a setting for this in the p5k pro bios any suggesting? I know most people never use full load but with flight simx i was getting blue screens with any lower Vcore as this uses 100% cpu.

Is there a setting im not seeing in the bios for vdroop. at the moment i have 356*9 and the only voltage in changing is the CPU

    Re: q6600 heat problem?

Maybe its just the fact that your board/processor cannot go further than it is now.

If you are considerably upping the volts to get anywhere then its likely you have 'hit the wall'.

(As you say though, the ASUS boards are notorious with Vdroop problems)

    Re: q6600 heat problem?

That maybe the case but im thinking 1.38vcore idle dropping to 1.35 on load is a big jump. this is whats giving me the problem if i can get it more stable i can make my 3400mhz target. It does run at 3400 but not under load

    Re: q6600 heat problem?

I don`t think those voltages are stupidly high for a Quadcore, though you are pushing it with the temperature. I don`t know how well the Scythe performs on Q6600, but I think either your heatsink is not seated correctly or your not getting enough cool air into the case.

Have you applied your TIM correctly?

If you are really concerned with the Vdroop, there are often mods that can be done (at your own risk, obviously), usually with a simple pencil line between two components.

Do a google: "P5K Pro Vdroop mod" or similar and see what can be done.

    Re: q6600 heat problem?

vdroop mod, or accept the fact that you aren't going to reach that overclock?

If you're just using it to play games, why aim for 3.4 GHz? Why not just put it at 3GHz?

Those temps are very high... I'm puzzled.

I take it you've switched off C1E and EIST?

    Re: q6600 heat problem?

As you increase the FSB you may need to give the NB a touch more voltage as well but don't forget that gets hot as well!

    Re: q6600 heat problem?

its the antec p182 fans on high doesnt make to much of a difference. The reason i want 3.4 is Flight Sim x (i know sounds boring but redbull airrace is very fun) is directly linked to cpu and frame rates have increased no oend going from 2.4 to 3.2.

My bios doesnt allow me to choose a voltage i have to type it in and northbridge just shows at auto. how can i find out what voltage it is using so i can up it a little.

When i get time i'll try and resit the heatsink as it could be the shop didnt fit it properly. Ive never done it before though so that will be a last resort.

Sorry for going off topic, but about Flight Sim X, i played it on my stock CPU, 1.86GHz dual core, was okayish, not very smooth in clouds etc, Later I OC'd to 3.0Ghz, didnt try it though, I thought id try it with a new Gfx Card, do you think the jump from 1.86 to 3.0 is going to give me major increases? What is your result like?

yeah, that's right.. my CPU is clocked at 2.4GHz, Q6600.. but when it's only being used a small amount it drops it to 1.6GHz and drops the volts aswell..

    which is what EIST does.

no. mines running 3.2 all the time as speedstep is off. so the vcore shouldnt drop. thats why i blue screen as its trying to run at 3.2 with less voltage when on load
