How to control chasis fan on asus p5k deluxe/wifi

basically my 120mm fan that is sitting on top of my thermalright hr-03 heatsink which is on top of my 8800 gtx is running at 1600ish rpm.
it is directly connected to a molex connector and a chassis fan input thing on the mobo.

however it is a bit too noisy for my liking but i cant find any way to slow it down via the mobo. i have tried looking in the bios under the hardware management option, under the boot menu but to no avail.
i tried changing the value of the option that says something like "try to keep mobo at X temp" and use fan% Y....etc

i know i could get a zalman fanmate, but surely with this good a mobo there should be a way of controlling it

    can anyone help?

    many thanks

Re: How to control chasis fan on asus p5k deluxe/wifi

if it's being powered by a molex probably not.

if it was being powered from a 3-pin header (& has 3 cables) probably.

There's your answer as to why you can't control the speed of the fan. It's always getting the full voltage. If you want to use the mobo controls like the Asus Q-Fan feature, it has to be powered by the mobo.

Re: How to control chasis fan on asus p5k deluxe/wifi

    cheers i did that.
i connected the 3 pin fan into the mobo but i still cant get the damn fan to slow down.

im in the hardware monitoring bit in the bios, and i have set the target mobo to its full setting and the fan duty cycle to its lowest (60&#37 but still its at 1600rpm.

    any ideas?

Re: How to control chasis fan on asus p5k deluxe/wifi

    And you disconnected the molex?

Haven't got an Asus so can't comment on the Q-Fan settings, but off the top of my head make sure the setting you're changing isn't just the cpu fan speed (as it sounds a bit like a PWM controller, talking about duty cycles). The 3-pin fans are controlled by adjusting the voltage, not pulse modulation.

Re: How to control chasis fan on asus p5k deluxe/wifi

heres a problem that might be: is it connected into the first chassie fan port on the board? ive found that you can only change the speeds if it is connected t the first one. All i did then is have every other fan connected by molex connectors to each other so i can control them all with qfan then.

Hicks12, did u use the bios to change fan speeds or the asus ai suite.
and also, what options did u select for a slow fan speed?

Re: How to control chasis fan on asus p5k deluxe/wifi

i used asus ai suite, i believe the bios is basicly the same but i use that just so i can change it to quiet if im watching a film or something like that(case fans are pretty loud >.<).

Silent makes it go around 1.1k, id recommend using optimal as it is around 1.5-1.7k then and is still not noticable(if you have case fans like me ). And i keep my case fans on optimal. If you have the setting disabled i get 2.6k on the cpu and 2.2k on the fans which is loudish without music ofc.

Download SpeedFan, disable Q-Fan Chassis then try controlling it using SpeedFan.

I'm at work and site is blocked so can't give you instructions, but you'll find the site and help file does a pretty good job of describing how to get it configured.
