currenty using some OCZ PC2-6400 RAM (2x1gb) in vista 64bit.

Re: 2x1gb to 4x1gb sticks of ram

i guess in all depends on if in the future u plan to upgrade with further ram and need the free slots in order to do so. would u upgrade ram later? it's nice to have that option.

if not, then i think it would be more hassle to sell urs at a loss, and then buy more...

i recently just bought another 2x 1gb sticks, and i've filled up all the four slots. but i dont think i will need more then 4gb in this machine. by upgrade time i'd prolly want a whole new board/system.

also im wondering if have less sticks in the slots increases performance.

when i had 2 sticks in, (this is only going by the vista rating) read write opertations were at 5.8 - when i have 4 sicks in (same crucial ram) it went down to 5.5? not sure why.

I have just upgraded to 4x1gb of the same Ram (Ballistix ) and my rating stayed the same at 5.9

No changes in bios? All ram timings and speeds manually set and were not changed? Otherwise i cannot see why performance would decrease such a large amount.

Then again its a Windows benchmark, when can you trust giant corporations who wish to market their own product?

yep, i checked the bios, nothing seemed to be changed...but then again i still don't know how to change the timings in my bios (they are at 5-5-5-or something when i check cpu-z), but i know these sticks are rated at 4-4-4-12.

i really dont know. only other thing i can think of is...i bought my first pair in december, and this pair now - although they are the same make/rating etc - the design of the first is slightly different (the way the heatspreaders are on). but i doubt that could be it! but maybe that means they are different revision or something...

Re: 2x1gb to 4x1gb sticks of ram

Yeah I think it's fine on modern boards. I just found a limitation of my otherwise excellent asrock and manchester x2 - it can't boot with 4 sticks at DDR400 and I have to keep it below DDR370 to work
