    1 core disabled?!

    Hello

Last week I got the following upgrade for my PC

    4GB (2x2GB) Corsair TwinX XMS2, DDR
    Intel Pentium Dual-Core E2160, S775
    500 GB Western Digital WD5000AAKS C
    Edimax EW-7728In 802.11n *Draft"n"
    Gigabyte GA-73PVM-S2H, NF 630i, S 7

Now I've checked with PC Wizard 2008 and it states only 1 core is active.

On the Bios it does have multi-core enabled - so I'm not sure what else to look at.

Tonight I'm going to update the bios from F2 to F5.

Does 1 core being off happen often or/is there a way of checking accurately and changing it?

    Thanks in advance

    Re: 1 core disabled?!

If there aren't two graphs in task manager, then it'll be the old "not got ACPI Multiprocessor HAL" installed problem. It's gotta be the second most asked-after hardware problem after "why isn't my 4 gigs of ram working in Windows XP?"...

Yeah, open the task manager, in the performance tab, you should see two CPU usage graphs for two cores.

    Re: 1 core disabled?!

    Hi all.

Before Bios update Task Manager only had one core.

After update it is still the same.

I've checked this from the internet as well.

'Go to Start>Run and enter msinfo32. Under System summary
you should see two identical processors listed. If only one is
listed, is your M/B and BIOS Core2 Duo ready?

One other thing to check, though unlikely, is to run msconfig>
BOOT.INI>Advanced Options, and make sure the
    NUMPROC= box is not ticked'

    and

'Try going to Device Manger, and look under "Computer". It should say "ACPI Multiprocessor PC" if it's correct.
Also... you should be seeing 2 cores under Processors...
Yes the multiprocessor bit that is lacking is relevant. Essentially you need to change your HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) to one that supports Symmetric Multi-Processing (SMP).

Two options really. This is prob the easiest for you:

    [ Hardware.Info ] - Problems updating to a dual-core CPU? Not anymore!

    or you can do this:

    Quote:
    1) Start device manager.
    2) In device manager expand 'Computer'.
    3) Under Computer you should see the currently installed 'HAL' information "Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC", or some such.
    4) Right click the (ACPI) PC device and choose 'Update Driver'
    5) Then select :
    - "No, not this time" in the connect to windows update screen, and click next.
    - Click on "Install from a list or specific location", click next.
    - Click "Don't search, I will choose driver to install", click next.
    - Make sure the "Show compatible hardware" check box is checked, then...
    - ... select the correct HAL for your system type (ACPI Multiprocessor PC) and follow the instruction from the wizard to complete the install.
If none of the above works, then chances are the core is somehow disabled in bios.'

    Oh man. I'd appreciate help!

Have you done the stuff you listed above, about installing the ACPI multiprocessor HAL?

Exxtremely unlikely. It will be a configuration/driver/operating system issue.

    Re: 1 core disabled?!

In Task Manager you can also select one graph for all Cores, or one graph per Core thus:
    Open Task manager
    View
    CPU History
select one graph per CPU if it gives you the option

Bizarre! Maybe it is just a faulty CPU...
