    Problem installing Thermalright ulltima 90!

Hi I trying to intall a thermalright ulltima 90. My problems are not with space but i get a post error 8.7 on my abit ip35 pro borad. now after 4 hours I have found that when i tighten screws to fasten the heat sink this is what is causing the problem it will post if the srews are tight.

So thouht it miht be the screws but found that without screws even if I applied pressure with my hand again won't post. What the hell is going on?!!

Really bizzarr probelm as my arctic freezer pro had no such problems.

Do you think it is the back plate or something?

Re: Problem installing Thermalright ulltima 90!

Thermalrights 120 had problems with the bases not being flat this produced variable reported temp issues with people having to lap the base.

The screws will only tighten to the required amount and thats all you need to do. Tighten them down till you cant turn the screw. If it posting when you have installed correctly I dont quite understand why there is a problem?

What temps are you getting when it does post?

I do see your point however regarding the error code referring to a voltage error.

Re: Problem installing Thermalright ulltima 90!

    Hi rob4001,

I had a very similar problem recently, see here: Abit IP35 Pro post code 8.7. no boot! - Universal abit USA Forums

I have the Abit IP35 Pro and the Thermalright Ultima 90 & post error code 8.7. It was annoying to say the least!

I RMA'd the mobo and PSU but the mobo came back no fault found and they replaced the PSU (even though they said it worked, it was returned due to a different fault) but still once it all came back it worked! Same components etc....

Looking about the web it seemed from the few small posts I could find about this problem, people either had the mobo or PSU replaced and after that all was well.

Do you still have the Corsair HX620w PSU? as I seem to remember there were a few people reporting that the IP35 Pro & the Corsair had compatibility problems?

It wouldnt hurt to dismantle your Themalright and start over again, I noticed that you have to connect the backplate just so otherwise it seemed to be uneven.

Anyway, I hope you get it sorted soon

Re: Problem installing Thermalright ulltima 90!

So are you saying that if you tighten the screws fully it won't post? Reason I ask is that your original post isn't that clear. If this is the problem then check the backing plate and make sure it has a spongy pad which isolates the back plate from the back of the mobo. If need be get some electrical tape and put 2 or 3 layers over the back plate so that it's fully insulated from the mobo. Also check that when you tighten the HSF the backplate isn't crushing any components.

First I've heard of this. I have the HX520, the IP35 Pro, and a Thermalright Ultima 90. It posted first go and has done ever since. I tightened the srews as far as they'd go without exerting undue pressure - IOW I didn't try to get the very last degree of tightness. I did lap the base though FWIW.

Thanks for all your replies I got my system working it was the backplate so it’s all sorted now. Luckily it was not an incompatibility problem with the psu and the motherboard.

Re: Problem installing Thermalright ulltima 90!

A bit of the clear spongy pad had come unstuck and fallen off before I fixed it in postion I didn't notice so the backplate wasn't isolated causing the probelm.
