    Why are BD-RE and HD DVD-ROM Combo Drives so expensive?

    Hey, i was looking for reviews on HD-DVD and Blu-ray burners, found this LG review

    LG HL-DT-ST BD-RE GGW-H10N 1.01

    It is priced at $1200! That is a huge amount of money for an optical drive! People can buy whole PCs with that money! What is this thing? Gold plated drive?

    BD (and HD-DVD - before it became defunct) are quite expensive still (optical drives usually are for a few years). There is also paying a premium to have it both in one, and there are not that many combo drives around. Plus, the review is 9 months old and prices probably have changed since.

    £140 for a blu-ray writer

    oh okay, yesterday I was looking at an HD-DVD movie, before today I hadnt checked up on an optical drive which played blu-ray or HD-DVD, so my mistake, I was just totally shocked with the $1200 price!

    Can the HD DVD drive actually just be plugged straight into Windows and play HD DVDs straight away or does it need a special version of power dvd or something?

    I've read a few conflicting reports :s

    With Toshiba rumoured to be looking at its business strategy for HD, and more ofthe film studios reportedly opting for Blu Ray, it may be that teh days of HD are numbered anyway. Unless you really want to be bleeding edge (and pay for the privilege accordingly) it is probably still worth waiting 6 months or so - but otherwise I think I'd just go blu ray - certainly for a PC drive.
