    Ddr 3 + X48 T

I shall be buying either an X48 or X48T motherboard when they are finally (hopefully) released this month, probably the Gigabyte version.

Undecided yet as to whether make the leap to DDR3 now, simply for future proofing, whilst the opportunity is here. I would go for the 1333MHz speed but unsure as to which manufacturer to settle on. The best choice based on price is between the OCZ Platinum's and the Corsair TwinX XMS3 modules.

I know Corsair are highly regarded as quality manufacturers and yet the OCZ Platinum's are stealing the reviews for performance, more so than the OCZ Reapers.

If you can get some dirt cheap DDR3 then go for it, if not and you are looking at paying anything more than £140 for 2GB of high speed stuff (I got 1600Mhz DDR3 for £120) then I wouldn't bother, stick with some DDR2-1066 and get 4GB, you'd be looking at a board upgrade anyway in the future so could switch to a DDR3 board then.

In a way I regret going DDR3, if I want to upgrade to 4GB now I have to shell out upwards of £200 as the memory isn't available as cheap as it was before. I think you'd need to go to 4GB more so than needing the bandwidth that DDR3 can supply.

Don't forget, to run a 1600Mhz FSB processor you still only need DDR 800Mhz and you'd still get some OC head room with 1066Mhz memory

Unfortunately no DDR3 is cheap. I was looking at 2x1Gb - 1333Mhz which resides around £122 for now, followed later by another two on a 1:2 ratio with my current CPU running a 333MHz. The thought of Q9450 was also tempting me further down the line as this is natively 333MHz.

The new board I was hoping would last me at least 3 -4 years.

    Oh well !

    Re: Ddr 3 + X48 T

What sort of upgrading were you hoping to do within that 3-4 years?

Fact of the matter is, X-48 will cost at least double (if not tripple) the cost of a decent P35 (abit IP-35 @ £70 for example) and so buying a P35 now will easily last you 2 years of happy computing and then the money saved could be put on the next decent midrange board which will probably be better than X-48 anyway..

Also DDR3 will no doubt be cheaper and better by then.

There's nothing wrong with DDR2 RAM until they bring out the 1600MHz FSB chips, then overclocks will start to get limited.
