I will get these components soon ... anything not right ?

    1. CPU - Intel Wolfdale E8400 = £ 152.74
The CPU has to be this one or the Yorkfield Q9450 ... but I don't wanna wait until I'm old.

    2. CPU cooler - Zalman CNPS 8700-NT = £ 32.89
I am limited to low profile CPU cooler because there's only 78 mm space between CPU socket & PS.

    3. Motherboard - Asus P5E-VM HDMI = £ 83.41
I want mATX ... and I haven't found anything better than this one.

    4. Memory - GeIL 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-6400 800MHz = £ 61.09
I'm very unsure with the choice of memory, but it has to be 2GB modules.
By the way, these dragon heads have red LED eyes ... looks awesome.

    5. Graphics card - BFG GeForce 8800 GT 512MB = £ 158.50
The choice of the graphics card was very difficult, I'm not sure here.

    6. Hard drive - Western Digital 1000GB WD10EACS = £ 133.94
I would love to get SSD but the prices are still utopic. This model here seems to be a smart choice in regards to low noise (variable between 5200 to 7200 rpm) and reliability.

    7. Power supply - Silverstone ST50EF-Plus-SC = £ 58.74
This PS is specially made for SFF with shorter cables and temperature regulated fan.

    8. PC case - Silverstone Sugo Evolution SG01S = £ 92.83
The choice of PC case was one of the most difficult for me, but I feel good with this case.

    9. Monitor - Dell 2408 WFP = £ 440.62
With this monitor the good points seem to outnumber the bad ones.

    10. Keyboard = £ 21.09
    A question of taste really.

With the Q9450 coming out in a week or so... I would just wait a bit
I would also go for this, or this, or this... that will give a little more headroom for overclocking, especially since 800MHz ram is stock for the top end processors (1600mhz bus) and 1333mhz is no that far behind

The new Scythe Shuriken may be a heatsink option worth considering.

With the Q9450 coming out in a week or so... I would just wait a bit
Well, Sim ... let's see how the supply is going to be (I'm still Wolfdale damaged), or if we have to wait for sufficient stock until christmas ... and I'm afraid the chosen motherboard cannot cope with more than 800 MHz memory modules ... is that right ?

The new Scythe Shuriken may be a heatsink option worth considering.
That's funny because the Scythe Shuriken SCSK-1000 is on my top 5 list of low profile CPU coolers.

    Heatsing & Fan = 65 x 117 x 105
    Fan = 12 x 100 x 100
    Weight = 355 gr
    Speed = 650 - 2200 rpm, PWM

The geil black dragon overclock well, if your comfortable with overclocking ram that is, they are great I have some.
It's nice to know that these modules are no trouble maker ... thanks for the feedback.

Edit: I just wonder wether it would be possible for you to post a picture of your memory showing the dragon eyes glowing please ? ...

According to this, it works with 1333MHz ram!

Re: I will get these components soon ... anything not right ?

Thank you for the link SiM ... and here is the feedback I have had in one of the other forums so far:

    1. For a SFF case this CPU appears to be spot on in regards to the heat problem.
And even decreasing the frequency and / or the voltage could make this 45 nm dual core CPU ideal for passive cooling, if needed.

Many have recommended to wait for the Yorkfield which is due to be released soon, let's see what Intel says ... if anything at all.

    2. There are not many low profile CPU coolers but these one seem outstanding ...

    • Zalman CNPS 8700-LED / NT ... 120 x 123 x 67
    • Scythe Shuriken SCSK-1000 ... 65 x 117 x 105
    • Thermaltake Blue Orb II ... 140 x 66 (Heatsink) 120 x 24.3 (Fan)
    • Cooler Master Vortex 752 ... 112.3 x 108.4 x 75.4
    • Silverstone SST-NT06 Lite ... 125.4 x 78 x 148

    3. Motherboard ... as I said before.

    4. Memory ... some people advise to go for faster RAM. For example G.Skill was recommended. Others think to go for the cheapest memory is absolutely sufficient.
Well, my personal experience is that I used to buy the cheapest memory available and it always did what was written on the tin.

    5. There seems to be two fan communities ... one for 8800 GT and one for the 9600 GT.
The 8800 fans say that the 9600 couldn't touch the performance of this one.
And the 9600 fans say that the lower power consumption justifies a small loss of performance. Meaning that it makes perfect sense to have little bit performance loss but a lot less heat problems too.

    6. I was considering the Samsung Spinpoint F1 series of hard drives as this company has managed to decrease the number of platters what would mean theoretically ...

    • less heat
    • less noise
    • better performance

    HD103UJ / 1000GB / 32MB cache / 3 platters
    HD753LJ / ..750GB / 32MB cache / 3 platters
    HD752LJ / ..750GB / 16MB cache / 3 platters
    HD642JJ / ..640GB / 16MB cache / 2 platters
    HD502IJ / ...500GB / 16MB cache / 2 platters
    HD501IJ / ...500GB / ..8MB cache / 2 platters
    HD322HJ / ..320GB / 16MB cache / 1 platter
    HD252HJ / ..250GB / 16MB cache / 1 platter
    HD251JJ / ..250GB / ..8MB cache / 1 platter
    HD162GJ / .160GB / .16MB cache / 1 platter
    HD161GJ / .160GB / ...8MB cache / 1 platter

If you now think it could be easy for Samsung to put a fourth or maybe even a fifth platter into this design to create 1.2 and 1.5TB hard drives, I have to disappoint you. While other hard drive families utilize platters that are 50mil (thousandths of inches) thick, the Spinpoint F1 runs on 68mil platters. For this reason, it's physically difficult to simply add a fourth platter to the stack.
The thicker platters are used to increase resistance against vibration.
    WD10EACS / 1000GB / 16MB cache / 4 platters

WD efforts to cut the power requirements, like setting rotation speed to 5400+ and intelligent other technics have convinced me so far.
Besides this, my old WD 100GB hard drive, bought in 2001, broke down in 2006. The warranty had expired but after I complained via email WD had exchanged it for a brand new one - free of charge.
This kind of customer services has an effect and so it should be .

    7. One of the famous PSUs seems to be the Corsair HX520W which I had in my mind but changed to the Silverstone PSU later because of the shorter cables and very good review results too by the way.

    8. It really was the hardest desicion of them all for me to find the right PC case.
There are many nice ones out there but I always found something to complain about.
Either it was too big, too unpractical or most of the time just far too ugly.
I found the Lian Li PC-05A very nice until I thought that a mATX motherboard just has to be put into a mATX case ... full stop.
Oh, and I think that those people who love huge monster case bitches are just compensating for something haha

    9. The choice of the Monitor is hard too and not really just up to test results on the paper, but if I'd see a model by myself and would be happy with the appearance, I'd go for it ... full stop. Unfortunately there is only litle chance to get demonstrations shown.

    10. At the moment I have this Dell keyboard which I'm actually very happy with.

I have the same RAM, I haven't OC'd it yet but I scouted around before buying and all I heard was good things.

hey Micheal, the samsungs are the quietest drives around, and your clearly going for a HTPC style, so it might be good.

secondly, OcUK (yeah i know) have the BFG 8800GT OC for £140

also the new mini antec 180 is SUPERB and built for mATX, id deffo consider that.

By the way, would it be possible for you to show us a picture of the awesome black dragon's red LED eyes in action please ? hehe

@ shaffaaf27 ... well if that is not a surprise, my old friend !! ... do you still remember our times at the other forum ? haha ... that was long time ago.
I don't go there anymore - how about you ?

And yeah, I heard good things about the Samsung F1 series too.
Thanks for the tip, £ 140.99 compared to £ 158.50 for the BFG ... but only as "this week only offer".
Well, I don't like the Mini Antec 180 ... sorry
