I ve just oredered a 1Mbit ADSL line, and atm its capped @ 512k. They said I can keep my old modem, and its just a quesiton of swapping lines or something. But, how do they up the speed when its already capped at 512k?
Just wondering...

the speed is capped at the bt exchange, unfortunalty, theres no way to change it by modem. if your modem isnt capable of 1mbit downstream (look in the specs for it) then you will only conenct at 512kbit, but thats unlikely, iirc theres no standard for adsl that limits downstream to 512kbit
well, firstly what modem is it?
Really tho any modem should be capable of 2mb speeds I should think.
All current adsl modems are capable of 8MBit connections, you don't actually have to do anything, once your line has been upgraded to 1Meg the modem will pick up the line speed and off you go.
As above the modem will detect the maximum up and down transfer rates.
Actually I believe it is possible to "uncap" your connection from your end, using modified modem firmware, depending on the modem.
Of course, this is stealing, along with being a violation of the TOC.
Anyway, that aside - it's easy for them to change the capping without you getting new kit.
You can with cable modems, as it's an update via tftp on the modem which changes the settings, but you're very likely to get knobbled and booted off by the cable provider.Quote:

Its this one but its not the IDSN one, the DSL one and it says its capable of 8mbit connection so...
Hopefully it will be ok :)
yup, Alcatel Speedtouch USB, aka "The Frog" :)
Wait for them to enable the 1meg connection, sit back with a cuppa and let it do it's thing :)
Ah right, thanks for that. Anyway, my ISP's capping is rubbish - it broke twice in the last month - everybody could get full speed.Quote:
