    Silverstone SST SG01

I want this one so badly ...

    263 mm (W) x 216 mm (H) x 393 mm (D)

Weight: 3 Kg only ! ... I would love to see some moddings. How about a big window on the top ?

    2 x 3.5" internal and 2 x 5.25" external bays ... wouldn't it be possible to replace the 80mm fan with a 120mm one ?

Completely Aluminum ! ... not like the SG02 = part alu / part plastic / part steel

    (c) Mini-ITX, Nano-ITX and Pico-ITX related news

The space gap between the CPU on the mATX board and the power supply is 80mm only.
So it has to be a low profile cooler. The good news is that it could be a passive cooler as the fan of the power supply could take care of the air flow.

I could imagine the Zalman CNPS8700-NT with 67mm height as a good solution.
Besides this, it comes with a 4 pin PWN fan connector for variable rpm and awesome blue light.

As powersupply I like the Silverstone ST50EF-Plus SC with temperature regulated fan and shorter cables, specially made for SFF cases ... or maybe the Corsair HX520W Modular.

This case has no problems with the size of a GeForce 8800 GT.
I personally would replace the I/O sockets on the front with a plain plate to keep the clean looks.

Just imagine SSD will replace our noisy hd ... how quiet our PCs could be !

    Re: Silverstone SST SG01

They make a windowed version see Scan for pricing.

You can't rely on your PSU to act as an extractor fro your CPU modern PSUs have fan controllers so spin slowly unless they are hot, which you should really try and avoid as it only makes more noise and lowers the efficiency.

The only problem with the case really is the 80mm fans are not sufficient for high spec cooling and if you have them running fast to compensate for low airflow they will be noisy.

    Re: Silverstone SST SG01

I have one, I also have an SG03, which I think is a much better case.

A problem with the SG01, is that the PSU and the optical drives are back to back. If either is particularly long then they won't fit, or you will find that your cables have to make sharp bends in a difficult confined space. When I brought my SG01, I had assumed that all PSUs where the same length, so I chose a good modular one. Unfortunately I found that it would not co-exist with the nice Plexor DVD-RW drive I had chosen. In the end I had to replace the PSU.

The high end modular PSU ended up in my SG03, which does not have that problem. The SG03 also has much better cooling, and will take a pair of 120mm intake fans that keeps the whole case nice and cool.

    Re: Silverstone SST SG01

@ Webby ... yeah I know this one but somehow I find the wholes in the plexy glass ugly ... yep, looks and practism do colide in this respect.

@ chrestomanci ... the SG03 is incredible light and has the right size but ... I find it ugly the way it's designed.
I personally prefer the Silverstone TJ08.

The funny thing is, initially I loved the Lian Li PC-A05 and was so confident that's the one and nothing else.
Until I thought that a mATX board looks best in a mATX case, so I checked the available PC cases and noticed the plain & clean beauty of the SG02.
The only reason why I then have decided for the SG01 is the better material quality - full aluminium ... and think about the ridiculous light weight !

I have the feeling that people who like big cases need to compensate for something, hehe

The SG03 may be light when it is an empty shell, but once you fill it with components it is not so light. Mine has a quality Targan PSU, 3 hard drives, and all the usual stuff, and now it weighs a ton. I think the lightness of aluminium cases can be over emphasised.

    Re: Silverstone SST SG01

I like the SG03 the only things that I would have liked to have seen/change would be a vent at the top back to let a bit more hot air escape (maybe an exteaction fan here?) and not hugely fond of the surround on the side grill would have looked a lot better flush with the side of the case.

Now watercooling one would be very cool I wonder if you can fit a 240mm rad in the front?

Chrestomanci what cooler are you using and what temps are you getting on your Q6600 in the SG03? Assuming your my system spec is right.

I still think this is the best compromise for a cube
NZXT Rogue » Reviews - XSReviews.co.uk - Trusted Hardware Reviews

All aluminium, looks pretty nice, fits everything you could ever want and is cooled by 5x 120mm fans if you want it to be.

It's a bit wider than typical cubes so it can house all those fans but I think it's a great compromise. £105 at OCUK makes it a little pricey but only £30 or so more than the SG01

    Re: Silverstone SST SG01

Interesting ... had nocked it down before as I didn't like the exposed I/O sockets and the fact that it has a door which requires to have unneseccary clearance infront of the case.
The security by locking the door is deceiving as access via removing the screws on the back is a childs play.

You have figured already that looks is very important to me (remember: you can't argue about taste), but the disadvantages like much bigger size and much heavier weight is confirmation to stick with Silverstone.

    Silverstone SG01
    Size: 263 mm (W) x 216 mm (H) x 393 mm (D)
    Weight: 3 Kg

    NZXT Rogue
    Size: 368 mm (W) x 278.2 mm (H) x 421.2 mm (D)
    Weight: 9.2 Kg

By the way ... I think Lian Li's V350A/B is ugly like bitch.
Well ... any other suggestions are most welcome

    Re: Silverstone SST SG01

    Deffiantly cant argue with taste.

The silverstone is certainly a great case and when I was building my uATX I did find it very hard to ignore the SG01 as I really do like it. Space and weight wasn't a major, it just needed to be "fairly small".

What really put me off it is the cramped CPU cooler. The NT-06 certainly does not work with any reasonably quiet PSU. If you put something like the thermaltake blue orb or zalman low profile coolers underneath it you will get reasonable results but no where near as good as something like.... this

I wen't with the TJ-08 which I believe Webby has also and its a fantastic case in every respect. Tiny, light, great cooling, and very quiet. Compared to my Antec P182 it has a faint blowing sound but that is mainly due to the LED fan in the front (it's my girlfriends PC really..) The ninja was also bought at a bargain price so couldn't resist using it, even though it looks a bit out of place

The reason why I like the rouge so much is that you can essentially fit even more goodies in it in a still very small space

That said nothing really beats a tower imo. I got my black TJ-08 for £44 which is a bargain for the quality you get.

    The holy Scythe Ninja !

I love this awesome cooler ... if I had enough space in my PC case - it would have to be this one:

    The copper version ! ... 110 mm x 110 mm x 150 mm

Was thinking of the Scythe Mini Ninja (Minja), but with 80 mm headroom there's no chance:

Now I have made my mind up with the Zamlan CNPS 8700-NT / 4-pin PWM connector = temperature regulated fan speed (1150 - 2100 RPM) / cool blue LEDs:

    120 mm x 123 mm x 67 mm ... the downside: it's too loud at maximum speed.

    Re: Silverstone SST SG01

The mini fits in the Aerocool M40 (just...maybe lol) which is a pretty good uATX case but I don't think it will please you asthetically.

It also fits in the Antec Fusion which is the only other case I was considering when I got the TJ-08. Next to silent with the earthwatts PSU and tri-cool fans it comes with

It will be heavy and better as a stationary PC/HTPC rather than something you might take to lan parties.

Thats the zalman cooler I was considering but as you say it's not exactly silent and looks as if it will starve the PSU of air, or be starved of air by the PSU lol.

Thanks for that link. That case looks realy good, expecaly considering that it has room for 4 hard drives (or 5 if you use one of the 5.25" bays). I have 3 drives jammed in my Siverstone SG03.

I did not know that the Zalman CNPS 8700 was available in a PWM version. I have always liked Zalman coolers, but I don't like the fact that they rely on the user to monitor the CPU temp and control the fan speed, when we have computers for that.

    WOW

That hinged opening looks very cool. Accessing the motherboard and other components has been no end of trouble on my last 4 SFF builds. It is more or less OK, when a new system is built, but every time I want to make even the slightest mod, I have to pull out the PSU, the drives, and then try and work in a very confined space.

That clamshell action will make a huge difference. The only trouble I can see is with the weight of the top section when a high end PSU is fitted, and where all the cables will run. I would expect to see a series of cable tidies and loops for zip ties along the hinge side so that all the power and data cables running between the two halves can be neatly routed and don't get into a tangle when the case is closed.

    Wow man ! ... that's exactly my thinking !

    WOW ...
That's what i thought when I saw it the first time, hehe.
And regarding PS for SFF I will get the Silverstone ST50EF-Plus-SC (£ 58.74)

It has shorter cables specially made for SFF.

    Noise & Temperature Testing

During idle, the ST50EF-Plus-SC was very silent and it was the least noisy 500W PSU among the units that we have tested beforehand ... The PSU also felt relatively cool at idle and did not output a lot of heat. To test the CPU temperatures, we reverted back to stock Vcore but left the CPU frequency at 2.7GHz. At idle, Core Temp reported 41ºC whereas the Biostar tool reported 36ºC, which was not too shabby for a passive cooler.

Once we loaded up the system, the fan started to spin up and it took a few minutes before we could hear the fan spinning up. However, the noise was very low and you have to be really close to the PSU to actually hear it. With system at maximum load, the PSU started to get a little warm but the fan stayed relatively silent through the test. Even after 30 minutes into the load test, the ST50EF-Plus-SC was pretty silent for any HTPC setup ... again, this proves that the combination of a passively cooled NT06 and ST50EF-Plus-SC PSU installed in the SG01 is a pretty decent setup, even if you are overclocking. For the record, we recorded the CPU temperatures with the hardware installed inside the SG01 with room temperatures recorded at 28.5ºC.

    Re: Silverstone SST SG01

Well I reckon the M40 will just about fit the mini ninja, don't hold me to it though.

Also I reckon there is room to run another 120mm fan in the front if ghetto modded slightly.

3 80mm's in the back, I had 3 sharkoon silent eagle 2000's planned for that. Hell of a lot of CFM for not much noise

It's certainly worth a look especially as it's only around £50.

xcase sell the rouge for around £130 and pixmania also sell the silver version I believe.

The ninja was also bought at a bargain price so couldn't resist using it, even though it looks a bit out of place

The reason why I like the rouge so much is that you can essentially fit even more goodies in it in a still very small space

That said nothing really beats a tower imo. I got my black TJ-08 for £44 which is a bargain for the quality you get.
You are indeed correct and here it is with a bit more stuff in than Mike's

Oh the red SATA cable is hanging loose and is not there any more, photo was taken after I had snapped the connector on my DVD. Oh and my hard drives are cabled in from the front of the case to keep it tidier.
