Overclocking ?

Well im not a real noob with computers but iam having problems overclocking higher then say 400FSB(or 1600), any higher and the system will either, not post or will get to windows loading and then BSOD on me. Now i know the ram is good, it was stable at 950mhz so having a 1:1 ratio with something like 900mhz shouldnt be a problem (450fsb) but i think it is the motherboard that is lacking overclocking ability, would i be right? i havent had a BSOD since i was about 7 and so dont know much of what im looking for from it, any ideas?.

Also my CPU is completely stable at 3.6ghz and that is on stock volts, my motherboard was running it @ 1.18v on stock clocks and i turned it down to 1.15 @ 3.6 and its fine. Tried uping voltages on cpu and ram too no effect.

Ram divider?

3.6 is hardly shabby, maybe you have maxxed out anyway.

rofl, totally forgot about multiplyers and i never messed with ram dividers, care to explain how? i dont suppose you mean ram timmings?.

I'm not trying to be harsh or anything but don't overclock when you don't yet know what you're doing, it's likely to result in permanent damage.

3.6 is fine, you say you have upped the voltages to no effect..did you check your temps? BSODs also come up with a component heats up and shuts down. I would say just keep it at 3.6, its more than enough.

no affence taken but i have been working with computers for about 10years and work in repairing them part time. I know what to look out for regarding temps and voltages but only a few things i didnt know.

oh im sorry, thats just standard advice, m sorry. Hmm...well, from your system, everything seems to be fine, Im not sure if it is the motherboard, you say the RAM is good...probably you did max out.

yeh im happy with 3.6ghz, heck 3ghz is good but i just wanted to see how far i could get with safe volts . Will try dropping multi etc.

if you drop the multi, I dont think it will have an effect on the max reach-able FSB..and yes 3Ghz is quite enough for now. Plus I think your CPU is a 45nm, you are aware that they are somewhat delicate, right?

yup, im extremely careful when voltages are involved. I wasnt planning on going over 1.22v(max rated xD, want the warranty still) so if 1.15v can run 3.6ghz then its fine.

well take in mind that the e8400, bios still shows wrong temp. Been running orthos for 3hours and the temp is shown @ 48C, and 36C idle, i believe it is 1 or 2 C higher then stock clocks. and ambient temp is 35C, heating is on and i cant turn that off(parents like it on xD).

also the cpu cooler is not even warm, i think its more like 30C as its nearly cold .

hmm, yes the temps with these e8xxx are not correct mostly, but 36 idle and 48 load is not too much...

edit: well that was unsuccessful , did lower the volt by a .01 though xD and also timmings on ram are 4-3-3-6, didnt really try lower or higher, just randomly put them onx D.

I have this cpu and I think you will need to up the volts a bit to get stable. Also if running 450 fsb you will need to relax your ram to 5 5 5 15. Once you go above 3.6 with these chips you need to up the voltage above 1.3v.

Careful though, don't put the voltage above 1.35.
