Some new PC build troubles. Help please

I just bought a new rig and put it together the other day

    q6600
    8800gts
MSI p79 diamond (the 780i one)
4 gbs of ram from G.skill

    and other such things

its running just fine, without two gb of ram, for some reason with vista x64 ultimate, i can not get 4 gb of RAM working, and I think it may just be an issue of compatibility with the mobo and the ram. any ideas?

Also, currently the gfx is not on a pcie 2.0 slot as when I was setting it up, it only worked on a basic, would putting it on a 2.0 slot now be ok?

In the BIOS there should be something called memory remapping, turn it on ad it fix the problem.

I dont see this option anywhere, could you specify where exactly i should be seeing this and what it does exactly so i don't blindly turn on options?

Actually the problem is probably that you don't have the correct voltage for your RAM. Most mobos default to 1.8v whereas most of the brand name RAM wants ~2.1v. Check your specs and change it. Sometimes the MCH voltage needs upping a notch too.

Thanks, ill take a look into that.
Why then, does it work with 2gb instead of none at all if the required voltage is 2.1 and its running at 1.8?

That's the voltage to the main Northbridge chip. Sometimes it needs some extra power with 4 RAM sticks. You may have to find someone who has your board if you can't find the option.

Maybe try installing the 4GB RAM patch for vista x64?

Error message when you try to install Windows Vista on a computer that uses more than 3 GB of RAM: "STOP 0x0000000A"

Take 2GB out, instasll patch, put 2GB back in

That's an error message on install, and you'd have to have a Storport miniport, unusual in a home PC, to say the least.

Re: Some new PC build troubles. Help please

Is that motherboard the P7N Diamond? I couldn't find a P79 Diamond. If so then I think you can only try NB voltage. According to Anandtech, on MSI's X48 board turning this up too much caused system instability, so only take it up one notch, although I found someome OCing the board who had taken it up to 1.375 (NB to hot to touch though). I also found someone running 4x2Gb GSkill in that board without problems.

    Another thought. What's your PSU?
