    Barton 2800+ - Any good?

    Hi,

Ive been offered a Barton 2.8ghz.

Im not sure if i should get it tho.

As standard its 2800dk4vd and xxx370xxx (cant rem the last three digitd but definately low).

You can see that it has the downgraded from 3.7, but the stepping is lowish : AQXCA.

    I think its unlocked - week 34 2003.

Should I go for this or just go mad and get a 3200+? Thanks

the barton 2800+ is stock 2ghz, and ive got mine 200mhz up on that without pushing it hard, so yes its worth it. Not sure about the stepping on mine but I got it very soon after release so I guess its fairly early

i got my 2500+ today... they orderded it in themselfs.. obviously not an early model... and i have it running like a 3200+ without any voltage change..

So the 2800+ could mabey do much better...

    Thanks for the replies all.

No Russ, i meant 2.8+. Im paying about £75 for it, but could get tb B 2.8/2.6 for a bit less.

I was wondering what plays a bigger part in the overclockability of the cpu - the 'downgraded from 3700' part or the 'aqxca' stepping?

Or should i just be sensible and get a 2.5+ barton? Decisions decisions

my barton 2800 does 11*200 (3200+) fine - and i've had it stable at 11.5*205 and 11*215, though have no need for the extra speed.

it'll do just fine on a decent board / RAM.

    Hi
I have an 2800+ barton core and it is running at 11x215 @ 2370Mhz max temp about 50 degrees celsius! I can't remember what stepping it but I bought it sept '03
I would say don't bother with the 3200+ unless you have too much money to spend!
I have a Tt Volcano 9 Coolmod running at 3835rpm
    if that helps

    Just got the barton yesterday.

I got it for very cheap (about the price of a cheap 2500+).

Speeds (running with an Aerocool glacier - rated at athlon 2600+ and above, and some AS3) are as follows:

Had it clocked at 2.2ghz at 1.58v, but leaving it at 1.62v for now (my epox 8rda3+ undervolts) - idle temp of about 33 degrees.

Had it working stable at 2.5ghz at about 1.85 volts of juice, and had it boot on 2.65 and 1.9v aswell.

Think I got a sweet one here, dont you ?

    ---------------------------

Edit, i got the above speeds by upper the multiplier, but kept the FSB at 200, since anything above this, the system would pause whilst posting or windows would show me a blue screen.

Im wondering if this could by my RAM - pny rated cas2.5 @ 200.

    Any suggestions?

www.memtest86.com - test your ram without b0rking your windows install
it could be either your ram or your northbridge giving problems. i found with my nf7-s if its the cipset causing it, it will either restart or black screen, if its ram you get errors or blue screens probably...
try more vdimm voltage, and up the chipset voltage one (making sure it dont overheat!)
also changing the timings on your ram could definatly help, run memtest and note down what it says for your mem bandwidth, it will be ~800-2000 for an amd system, note that thevalue given is HALF what it really is, becuase your using duel chan, and its only looking at one chan, i assume. then change your timings to cas3-3-3-12 and see if it boots and memtests ok (some mem just wont run as certain timings...), if it does you should be able to get another 30 or so mhz. but the problem is though your mem is running at higher mhz, more mhz are wasted as latency, it can be faster to use higher mhz and more latency but you have to check with memtest what it says your bandwidth is...

thats a very nice chip if its stable at 2.5ghz - would be about as good as a 2.7ghz tbred, my tbred is only 2.2ghz, though with more voltage i could get 2.4 (it does post @ 2.4!)

2500+'s are really good, but thers always a risk of getting a rubbish one. besides, i paid the same amount for the chip anyway.

Whats voltages did you use to get it to 2.4, and what temps does it run at. Mine does 2.2 @ 1.58v (default volts is 1.65), and has not given me any problems what so ever. The temp is 32/33 idle. At about 1.85 i get 2.5 stable.

it could be either your ram or your northbridge giving problems
I dont think its my northbridge - its got a microcool northpole in it and temps have not gone over 20 degrees ever. But the fans is a screamer - bios says its running at 8000+ rpm and is louder than just having 4 80mm fans on!

Ill check the benefits of latency vs fsb in due time i geuss, but am not running dual channel at the mo - ive got 1 stick of 256 as temp, and 2 more coming through pcw extremely slow delivery!

thats a very nice chip if its stable at 2.5ghz - would be about as good as a 2.7ghz tbred, my tbred is only 2.2ghz, though with more voltage i could get 2.4 (it does post @ 2.4!)
1.7 tbred you mean? It does look sweet though - almost a gain of a gig!

whats your cpu temp under load? idle means nothing...
microcool nb is not THAT good, replace the fan for a 60mm or 80mm quiet one if youve got room there...
i meant 2.7ghz tbred - thats the clockspeed one would need to beat a 2.5ghz barton. my cpu is a 1700+, and its been clocked to 2.4ghz before, which is about 40mhz from having a ghz overclock

1.8V.... 37C idle and around 45C full loaded.
