Planning to overclock the chip to over 3Ghz. Particulary interested in any comments about the suitability of the PSU for the case? Anyone have the same setup? All comments greatfully received :-)
Finally sold my house so looking to get the parts in soon :rockon2:
Seemingly the Ultra 120 will fit in the p182 with a mm to spare :-s And anyone have any comments re 32/64bit OS?
Re: Any Comments Please Folks - New Build
Maybe think about getting 4Gb ram and 64 bit Vista?
Re: Any Comments Please Folks - New Build
bit too many driver and software issues atm, its primarily for gaming and general office work. Would always have the scope for upgrading should it ever become viable :-)
Also just noticed that overclockers are doing 4gb of the pc1066 reaper for bout the same price as a 2gb set
OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-8500C5 1066MHz Reaper HPC Edition Dual Channel DDR2 (OCZ2RPR10664GK)
Re: Any Comments Please Folks - New Build
Memory = overkill
PSU = overkill
As you're not planning to go SLi/Crossfire then you'll not need more than the Corsair HX520w
Remember that the quoted CPU fsb is x4 the actual fsb and memory quoted speed is x2 the actual fsb.
So the Q6600 at stock runs at 266mhz and PC2-8500 runs at 533mhz.
Look at PC2-6400 which runs at 400mhz, then you can happly push your system fsb to 400 which would give you 3.6ghz while running the memory at the stock 800mhz with a 1:1 ratio.
Personally I'd also consider the 2000rpm golf ball fan if you plan to stick it on the Ultra120, it's still pritty quite and being in the middle of the case does help to reduce the sound level.
Re: Any Comments Please Folks - New Build
Do corsair do a modular version on the 520? Always try to go a bit over on what I need. Can run the memory on a divider though and run it at its 1066 if i can get away with it, its fairly cheap too for 4Gb
Re: Any Comments Please Folks - New Build
Will the Thermalright Ultra 120 fit into the Antec p182? I was asking about fitting the Scythe Ninja in one and someone told me they had with about 1cm to spare if I remember rightly, and the Thermalright is 10mm larger than the Ninja. I'd be interested to know myself if you've already checked this out
Re: Any Comments Please Folks - New Build
That was a last minute change, my backup plan is the arctic freezer 7 pro. I know the ultra 120 is compatible witht he motherboard
Re: Any Comments Please Folks - New Build
hasn't the P5K DeLuxe been replaced by the Premium?
Re: Any Comments Please Folks - New Build
I think it will fit, found this pic
P182 + extreme
Although I'd probably get the ninja anyway as it works very well in that case :)
The 520w version of the corsair iPSU is exactly the same as the 620w version (just yellow stickers) so it is modular and is more than enough power. Since power consumption of the greedier components is going down not up it will still be enough next build i'd imagine.
The reaper RAM wouldn't be my choice due to the big heat sinks and the lack of performance gain you are likely to get. The heatsink's likely to block bigger CPU HSF's, so I would get normal size RAM and PC6400 running 1:1 will work work very nicely :)
Re: Any Comments Please Folks - New Build
dont partic want to use DDR3

Good point :-)

Re: Any Comments Please Folks - New Build
The only other thing I would change is XFX to ..anyone else. Even when your are RMAing to scan for the first year, XFX seem to cause more trouble than others.
You may have experienced different and if so then ignore that but from what I have seen/read something like BFG would be better.
Re: Any Comments Please Folks - New Build
been quite lucky with graphics cards to tell you the truth but might have a scout about for an alternative.

Re: Any Comments Please Folks - New Build
CPU - Save the 5 or so quid and go OEM as your getting a separate heatsink
GFX - Get a normal high clock card not a XXX card. They are generally not worth the money (£30 more for very little gain)
Memory - 4 MB any PC6400 will do. 2Mb wont be enough given 6 months way things are going.
Monitor - REALLY REALLY consider getting a 24" instead. Price difference is less than £100 to a acceptable 24" TFT and will give you 1080p compatibility, giving you more future proofing as 1080p will probably become a graphics standard for a long time. Scan have the PLE2403WS-B1 on today only over Easter, which is meant to be a ok/good monitor although the Professional version is better (for £40 more).
OS - Get Vista 64 Bit. 32 bit is really on its last legs due to the memory limit, pity XP 64 wasn't as wildly adopted :(
This will save you some money in some areas and spend it in much better ways.

is that bar supporting the heatsink something improvised? not seen it with the case or heatsink
