Computer not turning on

Hi.

Sometimes my computer just doesnt turn on. I found a way to resolve it, need to turn off the PSU (not unplug it) for about 10seconds. then it seems to fine.

However it is irritating, as sometimes you just hit the button and nothing happens. Seems more inclined to do it from a cold boot (e.g. in the morning's)

Computer: nf7-s (v2.0), xp1700, 2x256mb pc2700, gainward ti4200, 60gb maxtor, 450watt Levicom PSU.

I have flashed the latest BIOS on the nf7-s and it still does it.

So really is there anything i can do about it?

how often does it happen? are we talking once a month or every other day?

I would initially think somehing was slightly up with your psu... but if you trip them, they do need unplugging for 10 secs to 'reset' the trip, so it may be something in your computer doing this. check all the power cables? (especially the molex connectors) make sure there is nothing that looks like it could be shorting. Does it happen when you sometimes just reboot it?

easy option is just to turn it off on the psu when you've finished with it for the evening (I assume you don't need WOL?)

Sounds like you mite have a dirty power line thats knocking out the internal fuse in the PSU, try swapping power cables or running your PC from a different power outlet...

I've got a similar problem. My spare pc doesn't want to turn on at all. When i did get it to turn on once or twice it just kept on beeping at me. Not sure at all whats wrong with it atm

smells like a dodgy psu, or as trig said, dirty power..

I had a similar problem which was with an slot A athlon and the reason was the slot was not seated 100%, so i guess check all your seated componants again.

try taking it apart (and remove mobo)

and put it all back in again.

I have something similar to this kind of situation. My system has craploads in it, so at powerdown something trips one of the fuses somewhere. It resolves itself after a while and they way I startup/shutdown I never affects me.

However, my USB mouse doesn't like cold boots

Anyway, try taking some stuff out of the system - if a particular item is the culprit, the symptoms will disappear when it is removed.

It's possible to kind of "short" the PSU by having something which is broken attached to it i.e. cathodes and glowy stuff, if they're faulty it won't turn on as DaftpuNk found out

Well it has recently been happening quite a lot, every other day. Since i flashed a newer BIOS for the mobo (it was happening before that.)

The computer doesnt randomly reboot at any point. It generally happens from cold boots, but i was seeing what system is faster mine or my brothers in booting windows xp1700 @ stock, nf7-s, 256mb pc27000 (i lent in 256mb) versus xp1800 @ stock, kg7-raid, 512mb pc2700. Mine was only just slower btw

But the real reason for that story was that, i changed the settings in the BIOS rebooted, it saved, then i turned off. and when we hit the power buttons nothing happened on mine. had to turn off for 10seconds. It happened about 5 times i recall...

I dont think it is anything shorting. but i will recheck everything when i put my new hard drive in.

I get this when I've left my window open overnight and as a result my PC's freezing, I just solve it by unplugging the power cable and putting it back in and then it'll work straight away.

My PSU didnt tease me with problems, it just blew the feck up out of itself!

How so does it beep, when a PC beeps it tells you whats up with it..

It doesnt stay long alive long enough to work out what the beep code is
