Overclocking my HD3850.....
it should be realitively easy to overclock my 3850 (so i am led to believe anyway......:O_o1:)
so using ATI catalyst (using the overdrive application after it is unlocked) and rivatuner test it and can easily overclock to at least 770Mhz (GPU) and 950MHz Memory.....
problem comes when i try to apply the settings and both programs just revert to the stock settings (720MHz and 900Mhz)....
am i missing something?? is there something i should be doing first??
any thoughts gratefully received
Re: Overclocking my HD3850.....
Theres a check box in the overclocking section of the ATI Catalyst control panel thats says keep settings after restart do you have it ticked?
Re: Overclocking my HD3850.....
just checked and i dont get a settings after restart to check in catalyst control panel (i have got the latest version from the ATI site)!!!
now there is in rivatuner for applying overclock after windows re start which i have checked but that dont seem to work either.....!!!
Re: Overclocking my HD3850.....
Catalyst control centre will only run the overclocked settings in a 3d application, that may be your problem.
Re: Overclocking my HD3850.....
ummmmmmm......
right then original 3dmark06 score was 10006...then i did some mods on catalyst (770MHz and 950MHz) ran 3d mark and got 10500....
then did the mods on riva (did max low scale o/clock to about 850Mhz and 1000Mhz) ran the test which was OK and than re ran 3d mark and got 10400......ummmmmmmmm
when i restart the comp i get a rivatuner.exe programs wants to access your PC so seems as if riva is doing something but no extra to the 3d score.........
any ideas??

Re: Overclocking my HD3850.....
i would agree 500 wouldnt be worth any fuss like...but so far it hasnt been.....i am not sure that it is working as i have explained and hence i am not sure what i could get out of it (maybe theres a few thousand points waiting to get out!!!)
there is no issue with stability and if there is it is easy to get back......crysis is brill but i cant play it as smooth as i would like so for me worth expending a little effort to see what i can do.....
Re: Overclocking my HD3850.....
Unfortunately a few hundred points / FPS is all you'll gain but it's your call.
In terms of it reverting back to stock, I think you're mis-reading it. The clock speeds will only jump up when you're running a 3D application so use something like the artifact scanner in ATi Tool and they should jump to whatever overclock you clicked 'Accept' on in Catalyst.
Re: Overclocking my HD3850.....
thx nightshadow, you is right it does jump to what overclocked i clicked on!!!
how come the overclock on rivatuner is a lot more and how come i cant use that (is it because i am limited to what catalyst now allows?).....
i'm just hoping to get as much as a i can!!!
Re: Overclocking my HD3850.....
any ideas on how to increase the o/clock....crysis runs no better (but then it wouldnt on only 500pt increase!!!)...is it worth it trying to o/clock any more, rivatuner implies i can o/clock quite a lot more??? was considering getting a HD3870 and cross firing them.....would be about £120 quid so not too sure it is worth spending that just yet!!
Re: Overclocking my HD3850.....
When you are running CCC and rivatuner at the same time they are fighting each other try running one or the other to achieve your overclock (I imagine that CCC gets preference). Oh and remember just because the slider goes up to a number doesn't mean your card will be happy running that fast.
As to buying a 3870 and crossfiring that would be foolish as crossfire automatically clocks to the slowest GPU so unless you can push your 3850 to 3870 speeds you will be wasting money, so if you want to crossfire another 3850 would be the way forward. What resolution are you gaming at at the moment? Crossfire sees better returns at higher resolutions (when one card would be struggling).
