but in general, it's not really needed - open-source players like VLC ignore region coding, and software like anydvd strips region coding as far as *all* players are concerned, firmware or not

I always do it in software. There are a number of solutions, and you don't have to buy a naff OD just because someone hacked the BIOS.
As DirectHex says, use Any DVD. Free upgrades for live, it really works and does other good stuff as well. Download and try for 21 days then buy when you see how good it is.
SlySoft AnyDVD | any dvd, region free, dvd copy, copy dvd movies, dvd decoder, dvd ripper, macrovision, dvd copying software
Then you can choose your DVD dive based on other criteria rather than 'Region free'.
Pioneer drives are 99% flashable.
