Can you make sure I'm not being stupid also.
Hiya folks,
Its been a couple a few years since I last built a system.
Can you cast your expert eyes over this proposed rig of mine.
Motherboard :- Gigabyte GA X48-DS5 Socket 775
Processor:- Q6600 2.4 ghz 8mb 1066 fsb SLACR
Memory :- Mushkin Extreme DDR2 PC2-8500 4GB 2x2GB 5-5-5-15
Graphics card:- Asus Radeon EAH3870X2/HTDI/1G/A DDR3 PCI-e
Power supply :- Corsair 620w
Monitor Samsung 226CW
I use it to play the latest games and also want to start experimenting with overclocking.
Thanks
Re: Can you make sure I'm not being stupid also.
Should all be fine, only thing is that X48 board you list actually compatable with DDR2 memory?? I thought most of them were moving onto DDR3
You might wanna consider something like the aBit IP-35 (any flavour tbh!)
Re: Can you make sure I'm not being stupid also.
You certainly dont need an X48 to overclock the q6600 it will be a waste of money.
The abit IP-35 dark raider is more than adequate or the IP-35 PRO as it has some nice little features for overclocking like a CMOS reset switch and an led readout for error codes.
Mushkin RAM.. sounds expensive. Again you won't need PC8500 for overclocking the Q6600 as it won't be overclockable passed PC6400's stock speeds.
I would get 4GB of PC6400 for around £60, it will more than suffice :)
That's a nice graphics card, check ebuyer though, they have them for £235ish at the moment
That said, gaming at 1680 x 1050 can be more than adequatly acheived by a regular HD3870.
Re: Can you make sure I'm not being stupid also.
Seems ok to me, would maybe consider the abit IP35 pro motherboard. You dont get a great deal of gain with the X48 chipset and intels new chipset will probably use a whole new socket type so upgradability of CPU isnt a massive issue on the current build.
And for memory you wont need to get PC8500 to have a good overclock. This is an an apsolute bargain OCZ DDR2 800MHz
For overclocking you might want to consider a decent cooler Thermalright Ultima and fan, either 92mm or 120mm. There will be much debate on what fan is best but those are two examples.
what case where you considering using? Any particualr budget?

To be fair, there is this which is only £3 more including postage. Courtesy of GSte in this thread.

Good call
Re: Can you make sure I'm not being stupid also.
Thanks for the advice guys.
Have decided to go for the ABIT p35 pro ,the OCZ PC8000 platinum XTC and the 3870 single graphics card.
I have saved myself a packet.
Will know doubt be asking you for advice soon on overclocking.
Cheers
