Ok on stock 2.4Ghz my stress test is hitting 65-68c max per core. Seems very high.

I know im on a stock cooler and all that, I tried to increase it to 333 without changing voltage, and it wouldnt boot lol.

Is this because of the temp or does 333 fsb need some voltage?

my 64 x2 @ 2.56ghz runa at 29,C on full load.

on air-cooling.

but the c2d chips beat that at stock
probably dont hit those temps though but still way under 60.

What stepping version of the q6600 have you got? is it the B3 or GO? GO are better overclockers and need less power so they have lower temps. Either way I think you still need to raise the voltages a bit to overclock to 3ghz i think... prob not a wise idea if you're hitting 65-68 on load atm tho.... is your case airflow ok and how hot is your room normally?

I've overclocked my e6600 from 2.4 to 3.3, but before that I was using it in a different house and it was fine at 3.5. But since I moved, my current room is a bit hotter than the last one and it kept on bsod on 3.5. When I re-clocked it to 3.3 it was stable again. Mine runs at 55c on load, but I've seen loads of people with much lower temps than me. So i think your room temps and case will have a large impact on your cpu temps.

3. I have to blame the case, because even the stock cooler should do better than this (cue howls from the Lian Li fanbois).

My C2Q G0 was 65c full load with the stock cooler... I have a Lian Li though *runs*

It hit 3.68Ghz under watercooling though - 65c load... so, I wouldn't say its a bad chip - maybe Thorsson is on to something

my Q6600 would boot at 333FSB but not at 334FSB on my 680i LT SLi.. that was at default voltage with the intel stock fan, bought a Scythe Mine but i knackered my motherboard so waiting for that to be resolved before i can post any kind of difference in the cooler..

i'm expecting a huge difference though tbh..

agreed, the temps do seem to be the main issue. but if you can lower the temps and it still won't boot then try a lower oc and when it doesn't boot any more then up the voltage.

surprised about the lian li issue.... i've always thought, like many others, that they had pretty decent airflow.

Lian Li make a pile of cases. They're all built very well, but airflow isn't always that good. People make the mistake of thinking, "Lian Li - it must be good for cooling", but it's not always so. To be fair the most recent cases look better in this regard.

Mind you it's really hard to find case reviews that tell you about the two most important things, noise and thermal performance. They'll gladly write "War & Peace" about the grommets and screwless caddies, but it's only after you've built your system that you find that it sounds like a 767 and has the cooling properties of a fan heater.

CPU fan RPM seems a little low.. my Intel Stock Air runs at 1900RPM.. try upping the RPM on it and you might get a little better cooling on your Q6600..
