I think it can cause blindness if you drink it.

I seem to remember something on telly a while back where some snide vodka was isopropyl alcohol and it made a load of people blind. Might have been ethanol come to think of it and i think it was deafness.

I saw a report last year on some dodgy 'vodka' which has caused irreversible liver damage which given a bit of time would cause liver failure and death, people were turn up at hospital but were just left to let nature take it's course. You could tell which people had drunk the 'vodka' because part of the skin were turning yellow

Ethanol is the normal alcohol you find in all booze.

I'm pretty sure IPA doesn't cause blindness.

Some organic chemicals once ingested are metabolised into formaldehyde which causes blindness. The most notorious chemical which causes this is methanol, found in anti-freeze and methylated spirits.

Methanol causes blindness through it's endproduct formic acid. It kills the retinal pigmented epithelium that nourishes your photoreceptors.

One usually finds ethylene glycol as antifreeze, which is converted to oxalic acid. Very bad for your kidneys, as it is rather insoluble and accumulates there.

I'm not sure if the endproducts of Isopropanol are toxic. My guess is yes, but in a normal state of mind you wouldn't be able to swallow much of it, as it tastes absolutely horrible.

that was actually sourced back to round where i live.. people were selling it on car-boots and stuff.. and it contained methanol instead of ethanol i think, or the other way around and it caused blindness..

Yes it is toxic - in much the same way that ethanol is toxic.

Isopropanol

Isopropanol is found in OTC rubbing alcohol (70% isopropanol), antifreeze, skin lotions, and some home cleaning products.

Death from ingestion of isopropanol is uncommon. Isopropanol has 2-3 times the potency of ethanol and causes hypotension and CNS and respiratory depression more readily than ethanol. Peak levels occur approximately 30 minutes after ingestion because of rapid GI absorption, which is delayed in the presence of food. Isopropanol is a CNS and cardiac depressant with about twice the potency of ethanol. Serum levels more than 400 mg/dL are potentially fatal.

Approximately 20-50% of isopropanol is excreted unchanged by the kidney, while 50-80% is converted in the liver to acetone, which is a CNS depressant in its own right. Acetone is excreted primarily by the kidneys, with some excretion through the lungs. The elimination half-life of isopropanol is 4-6 hours; that of acetone is 16-20 hours. The prolonged CNS depression seen with isopropanol ingestion is partially related to acetone's CNS depressant effects.

Safety

Isopropyl alcohol vapor is heavier than air and is highly flammable with a very wide combustible range. It should be kept away from heat and open flame. When mixed with air or other oxidizers it can explode through deflagration.[4]

Isopropyl alcohol is oxidized by the liver into acetone. Symptoms of isopropyl alcohol poisoning include flushing, headache, dizziness, CNS depression, nausea, vomiting, anesthesia, and coma. Use in well-ventilated areas and use protective gloves while using. Poisoning can occur from ingestion, inhalation, or absorption.

Long term application to the skin can cause defatting.

Isopropyl alcohol is about twice as toxic as ethanol, though isopropyl alcohol does not cause an anion gap acidosis as do ethanol and methanol. It produces an elevated osmolal gap, but generally no abnormal anion gap (though this may be seen as a result of hypotension and lactic acidosis). Overdoses may cause a fruity odor on the breath as a result of its metabolism to give acetone which is not further metabolized.[5] While small quantities (~ 15 g) of isopropanol can be fatal if left untreated, it is not nearly as toxic as methanol or ethylene glycol.[6]

I've heard of stories of chemists mistaking methanol for ethanol and dying as a result of ingestion. All these alcohols are clear, colourless and have similar odours so the best thing is not to think about it.

I have consumed an "ethanol sunrise" once after a batch was made up by some chemists I worked with but I wouldn't recommend it if you don't know what you are doing as overdosing is quite easy, it's neat alcohol FFS!

be very careful with isopropyl! i used some to clean electronic parts and i forgot to do it near the open patio door. i felt like crap for an hour, nausea.
