    WHICH memory speed?

Looking towards some new memory soon as I will be be donating mine to my daughters machine.
I have already decided on Corsair and bought the Dominator Airflow Fan already just to prove too myself that that is the one for me.

The question is which one will give me the best all-round performance and gain as I'm yet still to decide how I'm going to run machine as the build is still ongoing.
    Thoughts:
    1. run the Q6600 at stock
    2. pump up the Q6600 to 3.0GHz (no need to go wild)
    3. give the Q6600 to my daughter and get a Q9450 and run at stock
    4. get a Q9450 and slightly OC

Was going to get a 3870x2 but may now wait for the 4000 series in June/July.

Memory choices: I'll be getting 4GB in total:

    1. PC2-6400 XMS2

    2. PC2-8500 Dominator

    3.Quad PC2-8500 Dominator

    TIA

    Re: WHICH memory speed?

I would say go for number 2 for the CPU and I wouldn't go for that any of those ram choices. You can save your money by getting this. You don't need faster ram than this because you aren't going to wildly OC your CPU
Also any reason for you choosing 4x1GB and not 2x2GB?

    Re: WHICH memory speed?

I would say number 2 too, plenty of headroom for a little overclocking and a good price. If you running windows you will only get 3.25gb of ram if you install 4gb. Ive not had anyone tell me that you get a better performance over 2gb when running 4gb? Might just be me tho.

what the hell is the difference between #2 and #3 apart from the QUAD and the F in the manufacturer code?

Price... and stock... seriously, there are no other differences!
Its cheaper to buy 2 sets of #2 rather than 1 set of #3

    Re: WHICH memory speed?

With option 1, at 1:1 ratio, at the limits of the Overclock on that chip, (PC6400) 800mhz is plenty and probably more than you would use.

Saying that, i agree with Sim aswell. I wouldnt buy any of those anyway.

Pick yourself up some OCZ/Geil/G-Skill from somewhere else.

OCZ - OCZ 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 Dual Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC Series DDR2 (OCZ2P800R22GK) . Thats ASTONISHING value and its very good, fast memory OR this OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-6400C5 Dual Channel Vista Gold Series DDR2 (OCZ2G8004GK) OCZ memory. 2x2gb for £50 CANNOT be beaten for performance vs value.

    Geil - GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC)

    Two reasons:
    1. If one stick failed I would obviously lose not just that one but also its paired partner as they are dual channel, but this would then still leave me with the second pair, so I would still have a fully working machine in the meantime and as we know Vista really needs 2GB to run efficiently and not 1GB.
Really the option no.3 is irrelevant because of this very reason, but I included it despite the major price difference in case someone was to illustrate that having Quad channel memory was significantly better.

    2. This will sound silly. It would bug me having two empty unused slots and because I'm running a 32bit OS simply because of software compatibility I wouldn't be able to have any more than the 4GB.

    ah thought so,
I was looking at the specs to see what justifies £200 more for QUAD + F.

Don't worry it bugs me too. I like having the slots full except for when I want to upgrade my ram. 4GB will be fine for now.

    Re: WHICH memory speed?

You are more likely to run into voltage/compatibility/other problems with 4 sticks. I would go for 2x2gb... Anyway, if one does fail then temporarily nick 2gb out of your daughter's computer...

    Re: WHICH memory speed?

This is what I currently have installed.
Was only considering the PC2-8500 really because of the headroom.

YOU LIES IN YOUR SYSTEM SPEC:
    Memory: 4GB Dual GeIL Ultra DDR2 800MHz

Well its up to you I suppose, but I would go for the 2GB sticks. The risk of failure is very small.

What do you mean? I do have the GeIl Ultra 800MHz sticks only 2x (2x1GB). I was looking at moving up to 1066MHz with Corsair, possibly.

    Re: WHICH memory speed?

You wont gain anything with 1066mhz strips.
The only time you will gain is you are doing MASSIVE overclocks with a VERY HIGH end CPU to support it.

    Honestly...stick with what you have.
