Cool Can any one help with Overclocking a 8800GTS? Also Is it worth it?

    I have a EVGA 8800GTS 640mb 3D card.

I have seen that it is fairly easy to overclock as the stock fan for the GTS is the same that they use for the GTX which get quite a bit hotter?

I have started to use a prog called "RivaTuner" so it can change my core speed and fan settings.
Was just wondering how far any one else has managed to OC there 8800 GTS 640MB Card.

Just a few questions i have.

I am not to fussed about the noise of the fan being on 100% so does that mean i can OC until i get to a temp of 80oC as this is what i have read to go up to? Other wise the performance of the card goes down hill if the temp goes any higher for this GPU?

Does any one have the setting they have OC there 8800GTS to that is stable?

Sorry if i sound like a total nub but I'm new to OC tbh

    Cheers

Go here to see the best way to use Rivatuner: RivaTuner v2.0 Guide at .:: Derek’s Blog

I have mine at 610/1260/902 stable. It will go higher, but I haven't really pushed it as ATITool doesn't run properly under Vista64.

well you can OC that card pretty much as far as it's stable.. they have ample cooling on those cards for it's speed..

    so download ATItool

    description of ATItool

    direct download link

and OC the card and keep testing it with the artifact tool on there..
once it starts detecting artifacts.. drop the OC a bit..

    hope this helps

and also remember.. turn the fan speed up before start playing games and just adjust the speaker volume accordingly and you'll be able to OC further while still being stable

i'd use ATItool. I like their auto oc feature, and also the fact that they give that live preview make life so much easier for OCing a card..

I set Rivatuner to put the fan to 100% when the temp reached 70C. It never has gone above 74 with that setting.

I see that you have a Shuttle. They are not so good at cooling, so your OC headroom may not be as good as other systems.

    Thanks for the guide ......

Had a go with it but not sure as i have been testing it with 3D mark 06 and results have been a bit odd?

Wacked it up to 620/999 and the hotest i got it to was 74c. Quite a good fan for stock tbh

Glad the OC worked... That sounds pretty decent for stock... If i were in your shoes, though, and i'm a conservative OCer, i'd slow down the clocks, maybe 5-10% so as to not overtax the GPU

I think the RAM OC may be pushing it on a stock cooler - you won't get the RAM temps told to you - but the 620 should be fine IMO. The 3DMark06 results are interesting. I'd try running 3 full tests though, rather than just one iteration of one part.

Good Idea, have put back the memory back to stock 792 and do not notice the difference in game, but leaving the core speed to 620.... Now runs Sweet as a nut in Crysis

    Cheers

Aye thanks again mate, been playing around with this software and you can do so much...

I have pushed mine to 620Mhz core and feel this is more than fine... like you said could go higher but no need.... Cheers again

Personally I think their auto OC feature is bobbins... it seems to jump up in large increments until it crashes the system in a matter of seconds...
