Thinking of getting a new rig...
I figured it's about time I got a new rig, just for a bit of light surfing/word processing etc. maybe the occasional game of minesweeper or solitaire.

What do you chaps think? Budget's a touch limited but I'm prepared to push the boat out to get good value for money. Do you think they'd do free shipping?
Re: Thinking of getting a new rig...
Hmm, I think you should try using DDR3 modules. Apparently they actually do work in DDR2 slots as long as you apply light pressure with a ball-peen hammer (must be that type though to get the right pressure-area ratio).
Also I'd recommend a third PSU (the Hiper Type-Rs are incredibly good and reliable and haven't displayed a propensity to fry systems at all). You should be able to stuff it in two of the 5.25" drive bays.
Oh, and good choice on the EVGAs, are you planning to do the crayon mod on R160? Don't forget to use the pink ones!

Frankly I`m Disappointed. You expect us to advise you and you come to us with this paltry budget....................
Surely you could stretch to:
3 x Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK
Re: Thinking of getting a new rig...
I'd check out this review before purchasing a Skulltrail, Kinky Luxury: Intel Skulltrail Platform Review, if you can't be bothered to read the whole thing just skip to the last page for the conclusion!
Plus is that memory compatible? As far as I was aware Skulltrail required fully buffered memory [server FB-DIMM], which is the major drawback of the whole system!
Re: Thinking of getting a new rig...
There is know way that rig will cut it playing minesweeper.I`d wait for next gen to be honest.
Re: Thinking of getting a new rig...
Maybe consider more memory (16gb) and perhaps 4 of those graphics cards? I hear Minesweeper can be worse than Crysis for system demands.
Re: Thinking of getting a new rig...
You forgot this, as well:
Optimus Maximus keyboard
Re: Thinking of getting a new rig...
How come you decided to skimp on the CPU? You need two Intel Core 2 Quad Extreme QX9775, Yorkfield Core, S771, 3.2 GHz, 1600MHz, 12MB L2 Cache, OEM
As for your memory, you need four 2GB Supermicro DDR2 PC2-6400 (800MHz), ECC, Fullybuffered Memory modules. Of course you could buy a few more and put them in any spare sockets/duct tape them to the inside of the case! It would be just like putting lots of memory into a 32bit OS!
Re: Thinking of getting a new rig...
Definately get the Optimus keyboard
Chimp
Re: Thinking of getting a new rig...
just wondering what you'd be doing with your current PC.. will you be selling off the pieces?
i'd be very interested in buying 2GB of your RAM off you..
£20 inc. del?
get back to me on that will ya? :)
cheers.
oh and on the new PC..
i'd personally wait for the rest of the 9xxx series of graphics cards before you buy any.. and i'd also ditch the 32bit Vista and get more RAM
and you could also save serious amounts of cash by buying a lower model Q9xxx series CPU and overclocking the arse off it..
Re: Thinking of getting a new rig...
Hmm - if you went for a linux distro, you could expand you games repertoire to include a very good implementation of Freecell, along with Tali, Mah-Jhong and Tux racer. :)

Sorry, I'm going to break down the old PC and use the components to decorate my PC room, kind of like a hunting lodge but with obsolete components rather than stuffed heads.

how much money do you have to waste?! :surprised:
not only are you spending nearing £2k on a motherboard and CPUs to go in it and then everything else on top.. you're decorating your room with the old PC..
briliance! :P
don't forget to post up some pics after you do that :P
