No Sound on my new Motherboard ?!?!?
Have a brand new Asus P5e-VM HDMI motherboard, it's nice but ... :surrender:
... just one big problem: NO SOUND
yeah, I tried everything, de-installed the sound drivers and installed them again, checked BIOS, let windows advise, let google advise - no luck.
It says in device status: the device is working properly
And in Control Panel / Sound / Configure / Stereo - test = error Failed to play test tone!
When I go to Windows Media Player and try to playback a sound, it says:
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly.
Has anyone had a similar problem and could point to any direction please ?
Re: No Sound on my new Motherboard ?!?!?
Try going to device manager and view resources by connection - see if you've got something else on the same IRQ as the sound card.
Re: No Sound on my new Motherboard ?!?!?
I had this problem on my IP35... after updating the BIOS, hardware manager recognised HD Audio, auto installed and away I was :)
Re: No Sound on my new Motherboard ?!?!?
Dear Kalniel
Have looked a bit closer at the device manager and changed from view / receources by connection, to: view / devices by connection and could see something remarkable:
The loudspeaker icon (REALTEK HIGH DEFINITION AUDIO) has a little exclamation mark !
And when I right-click it and scroll to properties, the following information comes up at device status:
Quote:
This device cannot start. (Code 10)
Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.
Would you have any idea where to go from here please ?

As Bounty_Bam suggested, try updating your bios first of all, then if it doesn't auto detect maybe use a program like driver cleaner pro in safemode to clear out the old sound drivers and reinstall them.
Re: No Sound on my new Motherboard ?!?!?
I had a quick look at Newegg and it seems that both problems with drivers (albeit in Server 2003) and dead sound requiring an RMA were reported in just 13 customer reviews. If the BIOS doesn't do the trick it looks like RMA time.
Re: No Sound on my new Motherboard ?!?!?
Have send the following email to Asus:
--------------------------------------------
Dear people
I bought the motherboard ASUS P5E-VM HDMI (V1.00 / BIOS 0301 / Built date 10/30/07) a few days ago and am very happy with the performance.
The only problem I do not seem to be able to get any sound.
The sound drivers are installed properly, the device manager shows under "sound, video and game controllers" the following:
2 x HIGH DEFINITION AUDIO DEVICE
When I set the view to DEVICE BY CONNECTION it shows:
This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)
When starting to playback any media file the following error message comes up:
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly.
Would you have any idea for why that happens ?
I do hope that it is not a hardware fault because the great inconvenience to RMA this product would spoil everything.
Thank you very much for your help in advance.
With kind regards
Michael
Re: No Sound on my new Motherboard ?!?!?
i had this problem on my old MSI P31 board..
1. disabled HD audio output in the BIOS
2. installed the audio device
3. restarted into Windows
4. shut down and activated HD audio output in the BIOS
5. booted up as normal
voila, sound worked..
possibly try some if not all of those steps and hopefully bring some joy to your audio problems :)
Re: No Sound on my new Motherboard ?!?!?
Also, may sound silly, but it happened to me yesterday :embarrassed:
My sound went again, reinstalled the motherboard drivers, rebooted no luck. Search Google for 40 odd minutes tried allsorts..
...Just make sure the wire is actually plugged in ;)

Re: No Sound on my new Motherboard ?!?!?
sounds (or not ;)) like an IRQ issue.
If you have ANYthing in any PCI slots, take them out, and then try.
Re: No Sound on my new Motherboard ?!?!?
Hello all, thank you very much for all your replies. Just wanna tell you how I solved my sound issue on this motherboard ...
Well, I was about to install XP over Vista, to see if that's any difference.
But before that - I decided to quickly install SP1 for Vista ... the process took a long time though (in 3 steps) ... and what can I say, GOOD LORD ! ... when it was finished, suddenly I got sound.
Now I need to find the cause for why Halo freezes everythime after one cycle of online gaming has finished.
Meaning: the new cycle should start automatically, but it doesn't ... I have to get out of Halo by going into the TASK MANAGER and exit Halo.
Switching off the firewall didn't help ... what might be the cause ???
Re: No Sound on my new Motherboard ?!?!?
Oh man people ... have put together my new PC a few days ago and had left the external graphics card out for the moment, to see how the onboard video performs.
Well, the performans of the G35 chipset is by far better than the old i845GL (2003) one.
Before I was able to play Halo in 800 x 600 with 15 - 30 fps.
With the Asus P5E-VM HDMI it let me play in 1280 x 1024 with 10 - 25 fps ... but the graphics quality is superior over the old PC.
Regarding my problem mentioned above ... it has resolved since I put in my eVGA GeForce 8800 GT. Oh my God ! .... I can only say awesome !
The card does get hot, but the performance doesn't let any space for complaints.
Problem solved.
Just one word about another initial problem I had. This motherboard didn't have any sound despite having sound on board. I tried everything but couldn't make it work.
Then I decided to install XP over Vista to see what difference that would make.
But before that I installed SP1 for Vista, and when it was finished with the installation - suddenly I got sound ! ... incredible.
Oh, and regarding Halo - Combat evolved. I think this game is awesome ! Well, I still have to discover Halo 2 / Crysis / Quake Wars / Ghost Reccon 3 / Doom 3 / Unreal Tournament / Flightsimulator X / CoD4 and what else there is hip at the moment.
Something funny what I noticed with Halo ... I was so hooked up playing it online on my old NEC PC from 2003. As I mentioned, it only played "just about" on a lower resolution, but still - I couldn't wait to play it for a few hours almost every day !
Only then, when I installed it on the new PC I noticed what graphics quality was hidden there in this game !!!
Suddenly there was gras all over Blood Gulch ! And another map had lots of fog - that wasn't there before. And the hog's (car's) headlights actually throw a beam onto the floor and walls ... incredible !
Of course with my new graphics card I pulled up the resolution to the max and boy, what a difference ! It's still smooth like anything but the sea in Death Island shows authentic waves moving slowly and the paint layer of tanks looks like real metal now.
The bullets have an impact when they hit any surface = bullets holes everywhere ... SMAHSING !!
When rockets hit anywhere they leave a black / charcoal burn spot = cool.
And another thing ... I never had seen any blood when killing enemies - now you can see red spots next to the dead bodies ... realism has a new meaning now !
The graphics layer of rocks looks more realistic too. Oh and not to forget the ice lakes (have forgotten the name of the map) has a reflection ... oh man, what a difference !
Re: No Sound on my new Motherboard ?!?!?
Hey there,
I work for ASUS as a Quality Control Inspector/Auditor......Last thursday I had the same problem with my computer at work. hmmmmmm Someone took my sound card out of my computer. The engineers had to replace my soundcard. ...Be careful messing with this company, I work for them and I see what they do with customers motherboards that they send in to be repaired....they don't send the original board back to the customer. You pay for repair fees but get an exchanged board back instead. I have contacted the labor relations board...EEOC and OSHA. This company is a great big joke and they screw the customer every chance they get.....if any questions feel free to ask.
:surprised:
:angst:

Re: No Sound on my new Motherboard ?!?!?
Skippye71 - Would you care to elaborate?
The exchange of motherboards for an exchanged board merely implies reduced turn around times, and is common practice in many industries is it not?
And also, as you may or may not know, most new motherboards have sound cards integrated into the motherboard, and as such, cannot be 'removed' such as taking a PCI card out. That would suggest that the engineer merely reinstalled any drivers required for its functioning, rather than installed a new soundcard...
