New build, can it run crysis?

I have in the past day spent 937.50 of my mates money on a new computer , heres the specs:

    600watt power supply
    Core 2 duo 3ghz 6mb cahce 1333mhz FSB
Gigabyte Motherboard with 1333mhz fronside bus
    2 Gigs of OC3 DDR3 RAM (also 1333mhz)
    eVGA 9800 GX2
    150 gb 10000 RPM Harddrive
    CD/DVD drive
    Cheapest Case possible

Am slightly worried about the Gigabyte mobo as i havent heard much good things about Gigabyte but i have only had good experience myself.

What you lot think? Anyone know how well crysis wil run ?

Like stink - 60fps at silly resolutions according to the benchies about.

I would say DDR3 was a waste over having more DDR2 and quad core would of been a better choice of processor.

Does crysis support quad core? i am under the impression that most games including crysis will only use a single/double core hence why i decided on a fast dual core.

The RAM i was unsure about myself but i wanted to future proof the PC, plus i like the idea of having 1333mhz running straight through the system up to the GPU

Re: New build, can it run crysis?

Future proofing is pretty hard - especially with intel's new socket on the horizon later in the year. I said more RAM because it makes a big difference for gaming in my experience, particularly on Vista which eats more of it from the get-go. It doesn't translate into more FPS so much as a smoother gaming experience and quicker flipping to the desktop etc. When I went from 2gig to 4gig I definitely felt it made a big difference to my system - load times went down and quiting a game to the desktop no longer became a swap-fest. Some games are seriously memory-hungry, some aren't - but when 4gig (DDR2) is 41quid retail it's a cheap performance upgrade.

Quad core is desirable because games will take advantage of it and they overclock very easily (running a Q6600 at 3ghz was so easy it made me giggle in all honesty) to dual core speeds. I doubt it makes that much of a difference in Crysis (if at all) given the age of the game (i.e. it was probably developed before four-core became a desktop commodity).

Sorry if this is coming off as a bit negative - i'm offering my honest opinion - your spec is mighty

Dont worry its not, your responses are very helpfull wiill probs add another couple gigs of RAM and could later on down the line if need be easily upgrade the CPU to the Quad as its supported on the mobo.

Many thanks for your help dangel .

Ok, then that's good. I was thinking you might be using a no name/generic PSU.

yer was thinking for Comic value of watching almost a grands worth of computer melt infront of the eyes of the guy i built it for and then announcing that he should of had insurance LOL. but i think that would be a little mean, Corsair are pretty good i think/hope, cant wait until the stuff arrives is gonna be WICKED"!! (but not in a melting a computer with a cheap power supply sort of way lol)

Re: New build, can it run crysis?

watch out on the case.. cheapo case usually have sub-par ventilation

Going from a cheapo steel case to an Eclipse-62, I easily saw 8-10C dip in CPU and GPU temps..

Considering the GX2 is going to be pretty steamy, the better the ventilation, the safer the components..
    Me want Ultrabook

Re: New build, can it run crysis?

Very good point will keep that in mind, the case has two 120mm fans one on back and one on front, if need be i have a pickaxe wich could sort out any ventilation problems we may face.

Re: New build, can it run crysis?

Another point to make about the GX2's heat output is that on whatever motherboard CustomPc was using it ended up over heating the southbridge to the point of blue screens so I would deffinatly put cooling high on the list of priorities.

The rest of the spec I would get the Q6600 and DDR2 ram. You won't be getting 1333MHz FSB in the way that you think, read clunks overclocking guide if you want a more in depth explanation of that.

The q6600 can overclock to 3.4 - 3.6GHz no problem and will be very safe at that clock in almost all cases. The new Dual cores seem a bit tempremental when overclocked (fragile due to 45nm maybe?) so the Q6600 makes the most sense to me given the prices are so similar for which you get a similar clock speed (which won't affect most games anyway) and it's spread over two more cores

    Techgage - Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0GHz - Wolfdale Arrives
Obviously this is quite an excpetional case but this guy managed to overclock his e8400 to 4.23 GHZ, methinks ill be giving that a try although maybe not so high , Whats a good app to use for testing this rig when it comes ?

Re: New build, can it run crysis?

Even if you do get to 4.0GHz it won't really offer you a huge gain over the quad but I suppose if the rig is just for gaming then it is swings and roundabouts.

The quads offer a lot more system flexability and I honestly don't think that 400mhz per core difference will make much difference when most games are very happy to run at around 2.4GHz on a dual core.

Up to you but the quad will last longer and as games start to use more cores it will start to shine against the dual core.

Re: New build, can it run crysis?

I have seen may people get the high clocks out of the 45nm's... thats not the issue i dont think. With the die being so much smaller, transistors smaller and closer together, they are more easily damaged by high voltage so once you start upping the volts on them, the life of the chip comes down exponentially
