    Dual-core upgrade

    Hi

Am considering a cheapish upgrade from my current AMD 3800+ venice CPU setup (as per 'My System' link on the left).

    E2220 2.4Ghz Dual-Core pentium £57
    Gigabyte GA-P31-DS3L iP31 £50
    2GB OCZ 6400 Platinum XTC DDR2 £33
    Arctic Cooling AC-FRZ-7P Freezer 7 Pro £15
    LiteOn 20X SATA DVD±RW/RAM Retail £21

    (All from Ebuyer)

Graphics??? an improvement on my 9800Pro but want a silent, cool and efficient GFX card. Am not an avid gamer but may play COD4 at some stage and was considering a 7600GT due to cool running? Also, support for 22/24" monitor in the future would be attractive.

I am willing to run at stock frequency but would like to perform o/c to 3Ghz perhaps in the near future and am using my Hiper 525W PSU still.

Hopefully I will see a significant improvement on my current setup.

    TIA

    Re: Dual-core upgrade

Why not just bung in a cheap X2 chip and newer graphics card? You have a fab mobo which can take PCI-E cards too

Should cost around £40 for the CPU, and £50 for the card.

    Hi

Yes, I had considered that but any X2 939 CPUs to offer extra power are going for £80 on ebay and only AM2 CPUs offer any alternative. I had considered the AM2CPUBoard (£28) with an AM2 Black edition 5000 (2.6Ghz) with some DDR2 Ram which is an option.

Anyone had experience with this mobo and the AM2CPU board and overclocking?

    Re: Dual-core upgrade

You want to play COD4 on a 22" or 24" monitor at native resolution? Might be worth throwing quite a few more pennies at the graphics card. Best get something with 512Mb of memory like a HD 3850 with 512Mb or a HD 3870. The 9600 GT will hopefully come down in price in the near future and is another good bang for buck card all considered, just needs the price to come down a bit.

Your planned build looks pretty good to me, and I guess you could always upgrade your card when you get a bigger monitor.

Does you psu have all the connectors you're going to need for SATA and PCIE? If not, then I would buy those somewhere other than ebuyer as they make up for their cheap prices by overcharging like crazy for stuff like that.

CCL Computers - Awarded Best Online Retailer 2007 & 2006 for Laptops, Desktops & Computer Hardware are apparently good for little bits and pieces, or you could try play or ocuk.

Don't forget to see if you can get an equivalent or better deal than ebuyer are offering by shopping around a few sites like scan and aria as well as the above.
