    E4500 equivalents?

I'm buying myself a computer, and before I buy it, I want to know if I can save money by swapping over to AMD.

The mobo I would get remains at about the same price, so I wanted to know if there is a cheaper equivalent to E4500... or if you could get a processor for the same amount of money that's better.

I'm buying from misco (not scan... mainly because I'm not buying this through my credit card, but someone else's, and they refuse to use anything but misco at the moment) so anything you suggest has to be available there.

From what I've found out, the performance of the AMD 4400 is approximately equivalent to the E4500, whilst being about £30-40 cheaper. Is this right?

Processor has to be 64 bit and Vista Compatible.

    Re: E4500 equivalents?

Well on scan.. the 5000+ black edition is around £60 but you would need an aftermaket HSF as it doesn't come with one.
    AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Black Edition AM2 processor - Misco.co.uk

Is there going to be overclocking or will this be run stock? The 5000+ is 2.6GHz but has an unlocked multiplier so it can easily be ran at 3.0GHz.

Genereally speaking you need a slightly faster clocked AMD to match Intels performance.

    Re: E4500 equivalents?

You could look out for second hand e6600s. I bought one with a AC7 for £75 recently and I've seen them as low as £60 on these forums.

    Re: E4500 equivalents?

staffsMike - it will be stock run... until I can be bothered to sit down for a few hours and OC it... and until I can be bothered to find myself a nice HSF, some nice fans, a couple of other things and possibly an extra £50 to spend on a better case.

dodgybob - I did think about getting something second hand, but I've had bad experiences with second hand things, and I've found it's quicker just to get it from the suppliers.

    EDIT

Just looked at the black edition. Does it have any other bonuses on top of the normal edition other than OC benefits?

It's £0.01 more expensive than the £4500 for black edition, but £9.99 cheaper for the normal edition.

Is the extra £10 worth it?

    Re: E4500 equivalents?

Well i have the fortune to have both the 5000+ BE and an E6600 and at 3.0GHz there is little difference between the two in the tasks I give them. 5000+ with a even a semi decent cooler will fun nice and cool due to it's brisbane core If you can sway this person to scan you would get both the HSF and CPU for around £75.

    Re: E4500 equivalents?

The Hyper Transport Link Speed for the 5000+ is 2000 that board appears to only support 1000 so while it will run it will not be at its optimum.

Also you do realise that the processor is £25 cheaper on Scan (for the black edition)... work on the credit card owner make then see sense!

No idea to be honest. It has some of the features you would want to do it, but whether it does it well or not I couldn't tell you. I just bumped the multi on my 5000+

    Re: E4500 equivalents?

The VM models typically have some OC functionality, the MX are more limited, or at least on the S939 ranges this held true.

Download the manual for it and check the options it states available for tuning, sometimes Asus give good detail, tho some of them were poor or innaccurate.

As a heads up, the Asus M2N-X I tried gave up at 7% OC, anything over that isnt stable, tried with 3 cpu Whereas the M2N8-VMSE was a cracker and gave a full 50% stable OC on a 1.9 brisbane. (max 300 bus available)
