Sub £50 graphics cards

Hi all,

I need a bit of help choosing a graphics card for a younger brother. It will be for games but using low res is no problem - he has a 17" CRT so 1024x768 ish resolution doesn't look so bad

At the moment I reckon the card is going to be a nvidia 8600GT or an ATI 3650. 256MB will do for his uses, but I do want the fastest thing I can get.

Please don't suggest a 3850, which can be had for around £85 I know... It's out of the budget (unfortunately) As close to £50 as we can get please

Any suggestions?

Oh and it's gonna be bought this weekend, so stock matters!

You can a 7800GTX for 55 quid delivered from Ebuyer if you use the Supersaver delivery they offer:

If this is too much you can get a 2600XT which will be faster than a HD3650:

ooh, yeah - that would do perfect... Expecially if he's on XP (no need for DX10 yet)... Look basically for second hand 7900GTX type cards... the previous high end cards... i know the X1950 PRO has been a solid performer throughout it's life, and should do well @ that res...

That looks a great deal, I wouldn't have even thought to get one of those, doesn't it need a 6-pin PCIexpress power connector though?

The 7800 gtx does require a 6 pin pci express power connector.

Also as Blitzen said it may be worth asking in the wanted section. I have seen a X1950XT sold for about £50 which is good deal as it is better then the 7800 series.

However what psu do you have in your younger brothers computer?

certainly would... If you can scrape the dosh for something like a Corsair VX450, you ought to be OK on the power front...

That's the problem with some of these older PSUs - the lack of a dedicated PCIe connector

Unless you can use a Molex -> PCIe connector? long shot, given total wattage rating, but hey...

If you can find out the exact make and specs, it would really helpful. Because otherwise cards like 7800gtx, 7900 series, x1900, x1950 would have trouble working unless the psu has a good amount of wattage + amps. A 400watt psu would be fine for these cards as long as the make is good and there is sufficient amps on the 12v rail.
