Which is better?

Have two WDs atm a WD5000AAKS and a WD1000FYPS

Do you think the F1s will provide a performance increase or any advantage?

Read the specs on the two devices at the respective MFRs websites and make a decision based on those, bearing in mind any price differential.

It is very difficult to form an objective opinion without the data, and very difficult to perform tests yourself to determine which is 'best' - depending on what your definition of 'best' is. (Best for lifetime, best for warranty, best for quietness, best for weight etc) Subjective opinions are OK - but ask yourself what the real value is?

For what its worth (not much) I use Samsung drives and they have worked well for me although I haven't used the device you specify. I have no recent experience of the WD drives, but I expect they would work well for me too)

These F1's are getting cracking reviews.

IF you do buy one though, make sure its a F1 when it arrives and not just a normal 1TB drive.
So etailers, whether meaning to or not, have been sending out the slower drive rather than the F1.

Depends on what you are looking for. Those WD drives are 5400RPM. The peak STR is a lot lower than the F1, but is still on par or faster than one older generation drives like the 7200.10. If you want performance, go for the Samsung.

One other thing is that those WD GP drives are very cool. Drives like Seagate, Hitachi or Maxtor would have overheated in NAS and external boxes. Those WD GP drives are the very few drives I've used that doesn't need much active cooling.

I personally run those WD1000FYPS in RAID5 so the point about performance is moot. All my other drives can't keep up with 1 drive, let alone 4 in RAID5.

Also One thing to note is that those WD1000FYPS are enterprise drives so they have 5 years warranty compared to Samsung's.

Although when I bought those WD they were much cheaper than the F1 :S
