Power requirements

Is a 500w antec smart power powerful enough to run the following system:

asus p5k deluxe wifi/ap
q6600 + Thermalright Ultra-120 EXTREME
2 raptor x drives (150gb each)
geeforce 8800
4 gb ram

?? will it be ok or will it be unstable or slower than with a better psu? Plan to run win xp pro x64 on it

And why xp pro x64? I take it you are planning on gaming right? Might not be the best choice of OS.

Indeed - a good 500 Watt power supply will have no probs. I suspect this is a 500W "peak output" supply though. I don't really know much about the Antec 500 Smart power, so I don't think I'd recommend it as a "no probs" power supply if he was running a 8800 Ultra for instance...

I'm in a similar position and am debating between the Corsair HX 520W and 620W. Whilst I'm sure 520W will be more than enough I also know that I'm going to be upgrading in time and don't want to have to replace the PSU.

If you're overclocking & going for a GTX or higher I would consider a more powerful PSU, otherwise 500W will be more than enough (as others mentioned)

i'm running xp pro x64 on my machine just fine. i have not come across a single incompatibility yet apart from a creative webcam. abd we all know what creative is like for drivers

Interesting. I've heard many people slating XP 64-bit for drivers and ting.

the x64 is for the 4gb of ram, I am running xp pro 32bit at the moment and can only see 3.25gb of it, plus I thought 64bit was supposed to be better for gaming due to being able to process larger integers??

Its not a 8800 ultra, I can't remeber exactly but its a 512mb GT I think (one of the cheaper ones, < &#163;200 )

if 500w should be enough I won't get a more powerful one yet, I'll wait and see how it handles things

Vista 64 is the one that you want, XP x64 is a completely different OS based on Server 2000. There's lots of threads on Hexus about it, just search for a few

I would not reccomend Vista 64 for myself. am having some strange problems in Online gaming at the mo.

I wasn't recommending a move to Vista as such but if you must have a 64 bit OS (to take advantage of the memory), don't make it XP x64!

OS choice seems such an issue, I'm tempted by Vista, but I really don't want to have to go through any of the driver issues that seem to blight so many people, and I too have heard of unusual online gaming behaviour/poor performance with Vista, which is why I considered/am considering XP x64 (although I thought it was based on XP not 2000)

I would like all of my 4GB of ram, I just don't want loads of driver issues. I guess losing .75 gb of RAM is not toooooo bad, maybe I'll just stay with XP for a little longer

There arent any issues as long as you have got weird/old hardware. The driver support is very very good now.
